Hopefully there will be some close matches.

If either team plays well, both could beat anybody on their day.

Pietersens' form is dodgy, as is Flintoffs fitness I think.

The Ashes: Australia's Brett Lee to miss first Test

Australia have been forced to rethink their plans on the eve of the Ashes after learning fast bowler Brett Lee will almost certainly miss the first two Tests.

Published: 7:09PM BST 06 Jul 2009

Lee, Australia's most experienced bowler with 310 wickets from 76 Tests, complained of a sore rib on Monday and a scan confirmed a muscle tear in his left side. It will be two weeks before he can contemplate bowling in the nets and must be a doubt for the third Test leaving Australia's bowling plans in disarray.
"I am very. very disappointed and gutted that I will not be there for the first Test match but I will find a way to bounce back," said Lee. "I still see myself hopefully playing a major role for Australia through the end part of the series, whether that's the second, third, fourth or fifth Test match depending on how things go."

Lee felt the injury after bowling in the first innings against the England Lions at Worcester. There he pushed his body to the limit bowling at more than 90mph to take six for 76. His ability to bowl reverse swing with the old ball was set to be a key component for the Australian side.
"It was probably a do or die match for me personally," he said. "I had to go out there and prove I can still bowl fast even at 32," said Lee. "It's only the second time I've torn a muscle in 16 years. It just happened at a pretty bad time, unfortunately."
Lee has a powerful action and generates pace through the contraction of muscles on his left side, meaning his recuperation will have to be carefully managed if he is not to suffer a relapse.
"He is a huge, huge, huge player for Australia and brings experience to the team," said Kevin Pietersen. "He is an amazing bowler and we saw how he can bowl the other day at Worcester. It is a huge loss for them."
The two sides trained at Cardiff for the first time on Monday but Lee was missing after being sent to London for a scan on the injury.
Ricky Ponting famously refused to change his tactics after Glenn McGrath was injured on the morning of the pivotal Edgbaston Test in 2005 but this time will have little choice but to be more flexible.
Australia will now have to decide whether to pick struggling spinner Nathan Hauritz or go for an all pace attack featuring the inexperienced Ben Hilfenhuas alongside Stuart Clark, who is recovering from a long term elbow injury, as back up for Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson.

Lee is and always has been overrated.
We won't be in a big hole with his loss. He talks about bowling at 100mph, but never gets near it, not even 90 consistently.
Most of the time he is gunbarrel straight, developing later in his spells to short and wide. :D
He amassed his wickets against tails and duds.

Johnson will make a name for himself. Pup will struggle, because his hair won't be set right, or something similar.

If Pietersen the cricketer shows up, the Poms (or UN as they should be known) are a chance.
If Pietersen the loose cannon whinger shows up they're sunk.

Interesting to see how Ponting copes with adversity, not too well previously. He is a "flat track bully" equivalent of a Captain.

Go the Aussies.

lol
Umm...turncoat soft cock! Seriously, who runs off to NSW from mighty Qld - never a good option...as Shane Watson will find out.

He'll be a good bowler when he learns to actually turn the ball.

He bowls "nude" balls - absolutely nothing on them :D

As for Watson, he's the new Bruce Reid.
He's broken down more times than Mark Webber:p

Now's the time for the next gen to step up and show us what they have got. Hilfenhaus and Hauritz could make names for themselves this series.

Agree re Ponting, good in his day and obviously a brilliant batsman but rather one dimensional as a captain. Glaring at your bowlers rather than changing the field around doesn't really cut it for me.

Dying for it to actually begin, can't wait for the start of the series, wifey is ok with it (for now) cause she thought it was tonight and didn't want to miss the return of back to the rafters. ;) :p Roll on tomorrow night, good old ABC and SBS !!

Sir Neville Cardus

I know plenty of professionals whom I would delight to have as guests in my home, but I'm afraid I cannot say the same thing about most Australians I have met.
AW Carr

The traditional dress of the Australian cricketer is the baggy green cap on the head and the chip on the shoulder. Both are ritualistically assumed.
Simon Barnes writing for The Times

Aussies are big and empty, just like their country.
Ian Botham

All you Aussies are a bunch of hicks who don't know the first thing about cricket.
Ian Botham

If you're playing against the Australians you dont walk.
Ian Botham

Chappell was a coward. He needed a crowd around him before he would say anything. He was sour like milk that had been sitting in the sun for a week.
Ian Botham

Playing against a team with Ian Chappell as a captain turns cricket match into gang warfare.
Mike Brearley

As harrowing occupations go, there can't be much to choose between the Australian cricket captaincy and social work on Skid Row.
Doug Ibbotson

A cricket tour in Australia would be the most delightful period in one's life, if one was deaf.
Harold Larwood

Well bowled Harold!
Douglas Jardine after Larwood fells Woodfull with a ball in the chest

All Australians are an uneducated and unruly mob.
Douglas Jardine. Comment made to Australian wicket keeper Stork Hendry during the infamous 1932-1933 Bodyline series.

If we don't beat you we'll knock your bloody heads off.
Bill Voce

Are you aware, sir, that the last time I saw anything like that on a top lip, the whole herd had to be destroyed?
Eric Morecambe to Dennis Lillee

The mincing run-up resembles someone in high heels and a panty girdle chasing after a bus.
Martin Johnson on Merv Hughes

The Aussies try to present a tough guy image, but this present generation are a bunch of cissies.
Tony Grieg

The only one who really got up my nose was Steve Waugh who spent the entire series giving out verbals. A bit of a joke really when he was the one bloke wetting himself against the quick bowlers.
Michael Atherton

If they stop throwing, cricket in Australia will die.
Tommy Andrews

Merv is a funny guy, though he would sledge his own mother if he thought it would help the cause.
Gladstone Small

Shane Warne is thicker than a complete set of Wisden yearbooks.
Matt Price

I have on occasion taken a quite reasonable dislike to the Australians.
Ted Dexter

REST OF THE WORLD vs. AUSTRALIA

The only time an Australian ever walks is when his car runs out of petrol.
Barry Richards, 1980

Are you going to get out or do I have to come round the wicket and kill you?
Malcolm Marshall to David Boon

You convicts are all the same.
Malcolm Marshall to Steve Waugh after he refused to walk

Go and deflate yourself, you balloon.
Daryll Cullinan to Shane Warne

Shane Warne : I've waited two years for another chance to humiliate you.
Daryll Cullinan : Looks like you spent it eating.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Hell, Gatt, move out of the way, I can't see the stumps.
Dennis Lillee

What do you think this is, a f***ing tea party? No you can't have a f***ing glass of water. You can f***ing wait like all the rest of us.
Allan Border to Robin Smith

Mate, if you turn the bat over, you'll see the instructions on the back!
Merv Hughes to Robin Smith

Merv Hughes : You can't f**king bat.
Robin Smith : Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f**king bat and you can't f**king bowl.

Tufnell! Can I borrow your brain? I'm building an idiot.
Voice from the crowd, Newcastle Test

You've got to bat on this in a minute, Tufnell. Hospital food suit you?
Craig McDermott to Phil Tufnell

Bowl the bastard a grand Piano and see if he can play that instead!
Yabba

Don't swat those flies, Jardine, they're the only friends here you've got!
Yabba

Don't give the bastard a drink. Let him die of thirst.
Voice from the crowd while Jardine was batting during the Bodyline series

The sound of the ball hitting the batsman's skull was music to my ears.
Thomson

The other advantage England have got when Phil Tufnell is bowling is that he isn't fielding.
Ian Chappell

ENGLAND VS ENGLAND

David Gower : Do you want Gatt a foot wider?
Chris Cowdrey : No. He'd burst.

How anyone can spin a ball the width of Gatting boggles the mind.
Martin Johnson on Shane Warne's ball of the century

If it had been a cheese roll, it would never have got past him.
Graham Gooch

A fart competing with thunder.
Graham Gooch on England's chances in Australia in 1990-91

England have only three major problems. They can't bat, they can't bowl and they can't field.
Martin Johnson

I'm completely different from Pietersen. He would turn up to the opening of an envelope.
Andrew Flintoff

AUSTRALIA vs. AUSTRALIA

Shane Warne's idea of a balanced diet is a cheeseburger in each hand.
Ian Healy, 1996

It was a mixture of bad bowling, good shots and arse.
Jason Gillespie, describing his own Ashes performance

Q: What's your favourite animal?
Steve Waugh: Merv Hughes.

In my day 58 beers between London and Sydney would have virtually classified you as a teetotaller.
Ian Chappell on hearing David Boon had downed 58 beers on the flight to England in 1989. Boon claimed he was afraid of flying.

Damien Martyn has batted handily in his unobtrusive way but fielded like a pensioner. Langer has his limitations. Without Clarke, this side has more carthorses than a Victorian mail coach. Suddenly this team is looking its age. Sometimes, when the end comes, it is quick.
Peter Roebuck

When Justin Langer finds his off stump akimbo he leaves the crease only after asking the met office whether any earthquakes have been recorded in the region. In any case, he never edges the ball. It's just that his bat handle keeps breaking.
Peter Roebuck

Border is a walnut: hard to crack and without much to please the eye.
Peter Roebuck

An ordinary bloke trying to make good without ever losing the air of a fellow with a hangover.
Peter Roebuck on Merv Hughes

Some buzzwords:

Dangerman - Someone a commentator thinks looked pretty good on the last tour and now deserves a superhero title. As in "Graham Onions could be a real dangerman here."

No Shane Warne ' Always followed by "of course" when things look a bit shaky for the Aussies.

Achilles seemed fine, brain needs a bit work though:twisted:
Could've drilled a wide ball outside off through the covers or point, instead tried to sweep/paddle to the on and caught. :no2:
He was looking good.

Reminds of M. Waugh at times, in the way he does it too easy some times and needs a bit of application/grit/mongrel.
He may yet go the same way.

If Mark had half the application of his brother, he would've been close to Bradman. For the likes of Gillespie, Cosier, Katich and Symonds to have better highest scores in Tests, is testament to his lack of application.

And from the central missionary position, it's over to you Richie:D

If the pitch isnt turning you need fast bowlers sending down either yorkers or short pitched deliveries at tailenders.

Thats where the Aussies let themselves down in both innings, they couldnt get rid of the tail.

Mind you, the poms can thank the weather gods, without that bit of rain they would have got their arses whipped.

Agreed, unfortunately (I probably mean fortunately) I'm an ex both!

When we first emigrated in 89 I lost a slab to our then next door neighbour in Adelaide Steve, I stupidly bet on the pommies winning the ashes series. We got hammered as per normal.

Since then I have seen the light, naturalised in 92 (never hurt one bit :wasntme:) and a mad keen aussie supporter since. Andrew who, Kevin who, cheating pommie bas#@ds! :p

So exciting. I can't wait. Isn't it amazing how Lord's revs the aussies up more than the poms. :wasntme:

Re Flintoff's retirement trick. It's classic pommie underhand "let's win it for Andrew" ploy. A La the Demons and poor old Jim Stynes. We'd have announced the retirement either at the start or end of the series.

The problem for the poms is I suspect they lack the class and ability. Let's blo*dy well hope so anyway. :D :D

Yes, I thought that may be the case ... but nonetheless, hopefully both sides will be more fired up ... Ponting's lot will be so ****ed they got a draw, & the Poms will be even more desperate to win ... did you notice the booing towards the Aussie fielders towards the end of the last Series?

Incidentally, have the overalls arrived? If so, what are they like?

Yep, they are a class act the pom supporters. NOT !

Also I thought if England hadn't taken part in the amateur dramatics of sending the physio and 12th man on to waste time near the end it would have been a thoroughly deserved and very well regarded by all draw.

As it was it left a bad taste in the mouth. I'm certain Panesar and Anderson would have preferred to draw on their own merits.

Compare that to the tension in Adelaide when we were playing the windies for a draw. Border may well have thrown the ball against the wall when McGrath? got out but he didn't try to cheat.

Also when the poms won in 2005 I gave Flintoff credit for consoling Brett Lee in the last wicket stand after he lost the wicket and the ashes however I didn't see us cheating or trying underhanded delaying tactics.

Sometimes it says more about you when you handle defeat gracefully - anyone can be a good winner.

I think the Aussie's probably wished they could have gone back to bed & started again. A big difference from Cardiff! They will seriously need to pull something out of the hat if they're going to improve at this rate.

Yes, I know ... It was just so awful to watch & so painful to watch poor Johnson. It really gets up my goat the way the media give them such a hard time if they're not in perfect form ... the bowlers even more so, because they've got nowhere to hide, at least the batsmen get to go off the field when they stuff up. But the bowlers have the cameras on them 24/7, picking them to pieces.

so what's the score? Can someone fill me in what I've missed thus far??:)

Johnson is on 48*

Yep, done like a dinner. Good to see the ol pommies showing some true grit.
Great match really - over 400 in the fourth innings. If only we did a little better in the 2nd innings. Flintoff was great and deserved his "5 for". Got to say I enjoyed it.

Umpiring was pretty average but as Ricky said. no point moaning - swings and roundabouts! (We just got stuck on the swings:mad::lol2:)

Love to see Hughes get some runs and Johnson get some wickets:angel:

No worries Panda, the other thing to try when the significant other is getting the hump (speaking from experience) :p is listening through an earpiece to the live commentary on 774 ABC Melbourne - Australian Broadcasting Corporation (http://www.abc.net.au/melbourne/radio/default.htm)

I even found a pommie website streaming live coverage. The guy was watching it live on monitors in the UK and commentating on the match via webcam. I was getting stuck into him with comments and to be fair to him he was reading them out.

Luckily for me I play comp snooker on a Monday night so didn't have to get abuse back from him. Bad enough watching us lose the match down at the RSL. :( :(

What was Hussey thinking ????????

We need to sort out our bowling attack
-try to sort Johnson's problems
-assess how Stuart Clark is going

We win the toss and he decides to bat first meaning we may only get one full innings of bowling at Northhamptonshire.

It doesnt make sense.

You can say that again. To be honest, our bowlers at present are rubbish ... are you watching the cricket now? Fill me in ...

No, just keeping an eye on the score, 8/300.

They got Hughes with another short one into the ribs yesterday from the sounds of it.
He's got to be skating on thin ice with Watson making 80.

When's Edgbaston start? Is it the 30th? Somehow I don't think there's going to be a miraculous turn about by then ... who have the got bowling at Northhampton?

Johnson, Hauritz, Siddle, Clark plus Macdonald and North.

Have declared at 8/308.

Siddle and Clark have opened the bowling.

Interesting, maybe they have learnt that while Johnson can be a great bowler, he is crap with the new ball

Yes, he's hopeless with a new ball alright! Seems he's going through what poor Lee went through when his marriage broke up ... you'd think the sports psychologists would have a better strategy to help them cope. Interesting too that Lillee picked him when he was 17 - thought he was going to be the next big bowler. That was, what, 7 or 8 years ago? What about Hilfaunhaus? I thought he showed pretty good form?

John, I can see where you are going with your thinking.

However maybe he was thinking we are never going to bowl these pommie basta@ds out if we don't get a good score on the board. We have to win the toss one day and we need to know if Hughes and Huss can post a few runs and get some confidence back.

I have just about written Mitch off, don't doubt his bowling ability just think it would take a superhuman to come back from his failures to date. Confidence must be shot to pieces.

And Hussey may have picked it right after all Hughes has now scored a half century whilst Mr Cricket got 80 odd.

I definitely haven't written us off as a team yet, I suspect there are a few twists and turns to come in this series. :D

In all fairness, the Aussie team have pretty much reigned supreme for quite some time, so it'll do them good to have a few setbacks to reassess their players, strategies, etc. As for poor Mitch ... all cricket players (or most, anyway,) go through bad times (have to watch what I say, don't want to incur anymore infractions), he is essentially a good bowler, but he's going through a lot of personal stuff at the moment. Am hoping his coach can work through with him & get his confidence back. Hate the way the press slam them as soon as they have a bad game. It's even more unfortunate it's the first time we've lost at Lord in 75 years ... so he's probably blaming himself big time.

Just checked out the report from last night and looks like Siddle was spraying them all over the place as well. Might need to bring in Clark and Watson and hope Watsons body is up to it.

I'm sure we can find enough bowlers to get them out. The real question is the batting, that's where we went wrong in the first innings of the last test. Have to get 400 in the first innings to be competitive.

I respectfully disagree. Most of our bowlers seem to have lost their form ... or just not experienced enough. Althought our batting leaves a lot to be desired also, usually, and I say, usually, the Aussie's managed to get their act together, even if it is at the last minute.

Might be a bit much to rely on it to win you the ashes.
