G'day all, i just want to make sure i got the right idea here. I am
98 percent sure i have a 1962 Series 2a...

I've just had the leaf springs replaced and now my steering arms hit the springs, i'll put up a pick.
From what i understand the steering arms on a series 2 are positioned over the axle but are underneath on a 2a?

Is the steering just upside down on my car?

2A steering arms come out from under the hub (S3 as well). My first question would be;
is yours a 2A ?
if so, has it had a front diff swapped sometime in it's life ?

Threads merged.

I wondered if you could merge the threads or delete one or smth?

I'm almost certain its a 2a! is there a way of looking up the vin number to find out for sure? the springs are the same on all the models i think? I've only had the it for 3 years so it could be possilbe that the
last owner made some changes.
It seems an odd mistake to make to put the steering arm on upside down?

even then if i do put it on the bottom of the axle the holes for the tie rod ends will be the other way around, i'm trying to picture it as the back bar is longer than the front.. do i make any sense?

Ron - thanks

Andwoo, post up your chassis number and a vehilce pic. I'm sure someone will be able to help. I don't think it is as simple as just swapping steering arms from the bottom to top.

It is a 1961 model S2, the 4th digit in the number indicates year (8 for 58, 9 -59, 0-60, 1-61 for the series 2's). So the steering arms should be coming from the top of the hubs. I am still really new at this stuff too, so I can not offer any advice on the fixit side of things.

On the bright side (for me anyway), this is my first technical assist, so I am pretty chuffed that I could help someone (you) as others have helped me.

Thankyou Paul, your a good egg in my books!:D Aulro has proved to be a real asset for infomation.
You know only a few weeks ago i thought mine was a 1963 series 2, till i was told that if it was a 63 it was a 2a. But now i learn its a 1961 s2!!!!

Damn it you know maybe i got the wrong springs in it? seemings i thought it was a 2a...

The change to underslung steering arms came after the change from 2 to 2a - like so many supposed distinctions between 2 and 2a! The only change I have been able to positively identify as exactly at the 2/2a change is the increase in capacity of the diesel engine.

Add to this the fact that assemblies such as complete axles are interchangeable from the first Series 2 to the last Series 3 .............(and the fact that any Series 2a is at least 38 years old, giving plenty of opportunity for this).

Does that make my landy one of those rare series 2 swb that shonky was looking for?

No. He is looking for the 1958 88" models which retained the 2 litre engine of the Series 1.

See attachment for how the manual depicts the steering arms.

Yours appear to be assembled correctly but do show interference, so maybe you have a bent arm on the hub.

Thanks guys.

My steering looks to be how it should be, there is a small bend in the drag link but not enough to cause my problem id thought.
I have taken this photo as well. One thing i can think of is that i may have recieved the wrong springs somehow?

I just had a look at mine, there is a gap of around 30mm between the springs and tie rods.
Mine has more sag in the springs too.

Yes, sorry Ray.. The main sign of my youth is my ignorance.
I'm going to pull that steering arm off and take it into my mates at Four Wheel Drives...
I'll take down the part number on the springs and kill two birds with one trip.
ALthough now i do think it is the steering arm rather than the springs.
