I have the chassis, shackles and springs all separated. I need to bolt the springs back onto the chassis. I have 12 shackle bolts as follows:

4 long bolts
4 short bolts with long threads
4 short bolts with short threads

Can anyone tell me which bolts go where?

Thanks in advance, Peter

4 long bolts - rear end of front springs, both ends of shackles; chassis is wider than springs, one shackle plate has lump on it to take up the space.
4 short bolts with long threads - rear end of rear springs: long thread screws into both shackle and nut.
4 short bolts with short threads - front of all four springs; goes through spring hanger and only screws into nut.
If replacing any of them remember that there are two types, BSF and UNF, and you have to get the ones that fit your shackle plates or replace these.

I think I got it right from memory!

Thanks John.

I've got the 1/2" BSF, not the 9/16 UNF. When you said it I had a moment of existential anxiety, and went down to check that the shackles and bolts were the same size - which they are.

I'm short 4 nyloc nuts, and they're proving a bit difficult to find - BSF isn't that common these days. Eight nuts and bolts came with the parabolic springs, but I only started to chase the other four up last week.

Still, one step at a time. Progress continues to be recorded at www.greenacre.biz (http://www.greenacre.biz), which is almost up to date - I haven't put the firewall and suspension stories in there yet.

I bought my BSF nuts from this chap:
Bruce Gardner, B.S.F. Bolts, 12 Nicholls Court, Mordialloc 3195, 'phone 0408 056 255, for BSF and BA fasteners and some other specials, and for BA taps and dies.
Thanks to Brian Hjelm for the advice :D

Thanks Charlie, however . . . another existential moment.

I went down to Nepean Boltmaster, taking one of the shackle bolts with me, and asked for four 1/2 BSF nyloc nuts. He replied to the effect that there was no hope, then proceeded to measure the bolt. He went out the back, and came back with four 9/16 UNF nyloc nuts - which fitted perfectly.

Unfortunately I was on my way to the city, so I couldn't get back home to check the bearings and springs to make sure they fitted, so I spent the day worrying about it.

However, all is well, everything fits together and I have 9/16 UNF throughout, so I'm happy.
