View Full Version : Fuel Filler Pipe

Filled up the tank yesterday (50l) and noticed that petrol was coming out nearly as fast as it was going in.
Seems to be coming out of the rubber pipe that connects the tank to the actual filler. I haven't pulled it out yet but I took out 20 litres (well about 30 but 10 went over me and the ground - glad it was only 2degrees outside) and the leak seems to have stopped so the leak is most likely on the filler end of the pipe. Hoping that the clamps just need tightening but knowing my luck the pipe has a hole.
Has anyone removed this pipe - it looks like a pain - the tank end looks OK but the only way I can see to get at the filler end is to drill out the rivets and pull the lot out.
Pointers would be helpful as I am starting to get jack of working on 101s:):(:(:(

I just looked at mine.
I think your on the money.
I hope it is not the pipe as you have a hard time trying to find something that will do the same job.
Remember the tanks are prone to rusting where they are soldered at the seams.
I have no personal experience of this as my tank is made from plate steel to the same specs.
Anthony Johnson is scrapping a 101 for spares currently.
(thats how PeterP got his missing side body panels)
I would try and fill it slowly and pin point the leak first before doing anything.
Just to make you feel better I am having my own problems with exhaust systems and front tailshafts.

Another interesting thing with my 101 is the original fuel pump is fitted, but is not used.
I was told when purchased it could be used as a back up.
The fuel pump now used is on the chassis near the tank and is the reliable Japanese cube type pumps.
Check that the tank is not filled more that you think ?
Is it possible the tank is near full and the fuel is coming from the fuel pump and fuel sender seals in the top of the tank.
It should be easy to acess the top of the tank though the acess plates above the tank in the cargo body floor. ?

Garry .........just thinking.
There may be another hose about 1/2 ID that goes to the fuel filler and the top of the tank as a breather so the fuel doesnt spit back when filling with Jerrys.
Should be accessed via top plates though cargo body flloor and easy to fix ?

Thanks Ron
The leak is coming from around the filler but could be a perished breather pipe from the tank. Is definitely not coming from the pump or sender seals. I need to pull it out to check - but looks like I need to drill the rivets - no big deal I guess.
Something has happened to my fuel pump - used to be able to hear it but it stopped working for a short time and when it started up again it was silent - still pumping but all quiet now - I am a bit suspicious of of it now. There is a cheap one on ebay that has 120 lph and about 4psi so should be good as a spare just in case. The ones I have priced in the auto shops are all around $200. (I also have a very old pump that I used in my jag as a spare).
I have finally managed to rig up a oil pressure warning light but the petrol fuel gauge is playing up - the strip resistor between the terminals on the back of the fuel gauge is busted - so the gauge reads full until the tank is half full and when the tank is empty the gauge still shows 1/4 full. I need to find out what the resistance is supposed to be so I can replace it with another resistor.
Every time I fix something - something else plays up. Anyway we are still moving forward.

I think that round Australia Action your 101 has seen is catching up with it.
You can pick up second hand from the wreakers the small cube type pumps cheap.
If they come from a early jap utes with a carby they will work well second hand.

This is the type of pump you need.

My fuel pump and you will also see the fuel cut out for the LP Gas just in front of the pump on the chassis.

Above the petrol line is the LP Gas supply hose from the rear(wrapped in nylon)

You can get universal sender units for the guage.
The float arms are adjustable etc to suit different tanks.
If the mounting plate holes dont line up with the one in the tank it is fairly easy to make a adaptor plate from scrap steel.
I have used one of these for years in my old army Jeep with no problems.
Most guages work 0 to 90 ohms.
My 101 might be running a universal type sender as the voltage and tank are not the same as is the guage its self.

this is the type of thing

The fork lift crowd which are supplying the globes you need would do a good range of senders and I could work off specs of the old sender.
Anyhow the sender problem is small fry currently.

Gday all.
Hang in there garry at least your getting to know every part of your 101;). as for the fuel guage the amount of fuel these things use just stop at a servo once a day and all will be good.:D rons on the money with the universal sender they are easy to fit and set. good luck
cheers gaz

Thanks but the sender is all OK - it is the little flat resistor that bridges the terminals on the back of the gauge. I will bridge them with a variable resistor to find out what the actual resistance is that makes the gauge works OK and get a normal resistor of the same amount from Jaycar and put it all back together.
Cheers

Not any more - just burntout but was able to repair it after pulling it apart and soldering in some bridging wire - works the same as before so I have just repainted the fuel gauge to match.
It is all going to go together as is - I will refuel with the truck on the flat and I will see if the petrol leak from the filler comes back - we know the answer to that.

Hi Gary
Are you sure it's a resistor on the back of the gauge? I thought it would be a capacitor to dampen the action.

No I am not sure - checked the fuel gauges on my two series 1s and they are exactly the same. Any way it is all back in - with the help of some white out and a black texta pen the gauge now reads correct.

Gary,
If I remember correctly, you were worried about the roadworthy man might not be able to read the engine number when you were going in for rego.
I am the same - I know where the engine number is but even with a mirror and light I cannot even see the engine number next to the dipstick and down behind the exhaust. I have tried from above and through the side access panel - any tricks??
Thanks
Garry
