Hey all,
after a few visits to ARB and seeing the exorbitant prices that they charge for their storage drawer systems, I plan to make my own. The actual construction I have no problem with, but I'm not sure where I can source a set of heavy duty drawer slides for them once they are built. I've checked out fleabay, but they are still in the +$120 price range for anything that extends more than 500mm.
Seeing as I'm far from being the first guy to build a set of rear drawers, does anyone out there know where I can pick a set of sliders up for a reasonable price??

Have a look at http://hettich.com.au (http://hettich.com.au/) and search for their drawer slides
The slides seem to start at around 5.82 in the catalogue up to 70kg ratings (couldn't see the ones I used - but didn't spend a heap of time looking)

These ones take up to 90kg >>>>>>>> 90kg Runners (http://hettich.com.au/352.htm)
I'm a cabinet maker, so I'm quite familiar with drawer runners. These runners were not intended for use in vehicles, but they are commonly used for 4x4 drawer systems, including myself. They will do a good job, but they wont last forever. The main problem I've found is, they do not like dust because they have pretty small ball bearings and they're pre-greased which tends to attract the dust.
Hafele have runners up to 227kg >>>>>> 227kg Runners (http://www.hafele.com.au/isapi/online/tchff/tchff.asp), but I wouldn't expect any of the heavy duty ones to be cheap.

I recently purchased a set off ebay, 750mm roller bearing type that are rated at 90kg. I'm sure they were $82 delivered. I've got the guys card with his details, so I'll dig it out and post his details on here.
I looked at the same thing locally for $200 +
I've also made my own drawer system/storage units out of flooring grade chipboard. The runners are excellent ;)

Hi guys,
Has anyone got pics of their setup so we can check this out in a bit more detail,,
I've seen plain bearings just bolted in a line along the side panels, top and bottom to accomadate a section of small RHS on the side of the draw. This seemed to look really strong and robust, ready to take the sort of pounding in the back of 4x4.

Hafele, Hettich and Blum are the best in the cabinet industry and have a life time warranty, I highly recommend them. The Hettich I think go to 1000mm long but are $200 a pair for under mounts like the old kitchen drawers but way way better.
Most rear drawer systems are side mounts but I dont know if they are stronger than the super strong under mount runners although side mounts are generally much cheaper.
Where are you? There is a company called "Nover" in most eastern board states which sell Hettich or search local directories. Dont buy cheap unbranded as it will let you down by having bearing failure.
Hope this helps

Sorry - I thought my location was in my profile. I'm in Adelaide at the moment. I checked out Hafele, and they seem to have a location in Adelaide, so I might pay them a visit.

I didn't use these on my setup as I got a set of runners from the inside of a heavy duty photocopier. But these ones came highly recommended from someone in the camper industry.
My first setup I made (2 drawers) used sealed roller bearings the same size as roller skate bearings. Drawers were 1400mm long and used about 80 bearings total at about $1.90 each. Each drawer carried about 120kg weight all the time.
Pics below of my current drawer setup.

An engineer bloke camped next to me at Cable beach showed me his home made drawers today.
As slides he used sliding door channels attached to the frame and added a strip of aluminium to the drawer with sliding door bearings bolted to them, the ones with the nylon "tyre".
It seemed a cheap elegant solution.

I took a look at this type of setup today in a TJM store as it happens. Box galv runner on the drawer side, skateboard rollers spaced with washers on a bolt on the frame side! As rough as it sounds, it actually looks and feels pretty solid, the bearings are sealed, are easily replaced, and if you get the rollers in the right location, the drawers don't rattle. $15 for a set of eight rollers on eBay - I might just give it a shot.

Keep an eye on ebay.
I got 2 pairs of Hettich for $40.00 plus $20.00 to deliver. This was from some one in Melb.
