Well, after tuning the key off and then realising that the windows are still down for about the millionth time, I decided to do something about it.

A simple little timer circuit and a relay that hold the power on the electric windows circuit for a period of time after the keys is removed.

I used one of these High Performance Timer - Jaycar Electronics (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5379&keywords=timer&form=KEYWORD) from Jaycar and a standard 12V relay. The timer is in kit form so you will need some some basic electronic and soldering skills to assemble it.

So then you have to rip the dash apart so you can access the rear of the fuse/relay holder. Remove the metal bracket from the firewall and then remove all the fuse holders and relays from the bracket.

now we are having fun... Its normally about this time that the wife come out and asks why our $50,000 Land Rover doesn't have a dash board.

Once you have accessed all the wires at the rear you need to connect up your timer and relay to the wires from the back of "R143 relay-window-lift" I wired my relay basically in parallel to the standard relay and took the input to the timer from pin 85.

If anyone wants the wiring diagram I can make one up, but its pretty straight forward

Then I just wrapped the timer in a plastic bag and some gaffa tape for protection. tidied up the wiring and put it all back together.

Time taken... the best part of a day.
Cost... less than $60 for parts.

thanks for reading. Comments welcome

Looks like a great idea, we always leave the windos down :(

I know what you mean about having half the car ripped apart, something just feels wrong doing it to a new car.

Cheers,

BM and I were only saying how we should look into something like this the other day. Good post and thanks for the info. Will have to wait a while before it gets on the list of things to do though.

as a side note...

I would like to thank Derek for supplying me the Puma wiring diagram on PDF. I'm not sure I would have figured it out without that so thanks.

Good bloody work. Why don't build one that winds the windows up when you hit the central locking button?

Okay, here are the wiring diagrams for this project...

First, the timer should be set into "one shot" mode and switching should be "high to low"

This is the suggested set-up for the project...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/08/1094.jpg

This is how mine is wired up...
Then, as I said, wire the extra relay in parallel to the existing one, get your trigger (input) from the ignition wire. then just run some power and earth to the timer
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/08/1095.jpg

When the input switches from high to low (12V to 0V) the timer connects the NO (normally open) to ground until the set time has elapsed. then opens it again.

I have mine set for 60 seconds. I think that is enough time to get out of the car and realise you have left the windows open, and still wind them up.

If there are any Auto Electricians out there who can spot a problem with my wiring, don't hesitate to let me know.

Have fun

Craig

Question. Has anyone looking into converting the rear manual windows to electric ones. Just wondering?

So what's the best way to get the dash apart, any tricks ? Also where can the wiring diagrams be found ?

I want to do some wiring in the dash, but have not had the confidence to make a start , it still smells too new !

Just as a thought, why not wire the relay controlled by the timer in parallel to the UP side of the window switch and set the timer for say 5 seconds. That way when you turn the ignition off it would automatically close the windows any way.

Could also put a switch in the circuit for when you want to leave them down on purpose though :D

So what's the best way to get the dash apart, any tricks ?

The dash is pretty easy,

Centre console...Take the two screws out from near the radio. then grab hold of the dash up the top near the A/C vents and give it a good tug. There are six clips that hold the thing on and they take a bit of force to get out. just have a little faith. after you get it out just remove all the plugs from the back (take a photo) and your done. (the plug on the hazard switch is a bit of a bitch)

Instrument cluster isn't to hard, remove the cover the sits just above the steering wheel arm, (I also removed the cover around the steering wheel that has the wipers, indicators and ignition inside however I'm not sure that you have to.) then remove the instrument cluster, its held on by some screws and another two of those clips.

After that, to get the whole dash off, well not all the way off but out a few inches so you can get in behind it...
there are three screws at the top near the windshield, and a whole pile of smaller screws around the foot wells, just remove them all and it kind of wiggles free.

Hope that made sense...

Foz,

As for winding the windows up automatically when the ignition goes off, I must admit I didnt think about it, but I'm pretty happy with how it is now. Time will tell.
