How? haha

I went out and bought bearing pullers which were cheap as, thinking it'd do the trick but as it turns out I was wrong, the teeth don't fit into the groove.

So what are my other options? I dont want to buy the LR tool because it will cost me a small fortune. Help!

Regards,

Matt

Matt,
You'll have to buy a certain kind of puller, one that has a 2 piece 'bearing plate' and extended length legs, with a hydraulic ram unit etc to remove the collar. It helps to warm the collar slightly, you won't be reusing it so don't worry about damaging it:twisted:

Just having a look at some pullers that I think may do the trick:

Bloody expensive

I used a steady hand and an angle grinder.

Matt,

Thats the one I have, but with the extras and the hydraulic ram was closer to $400.

Can you borrow one from someone for the job? Or, $179 isn't too bad and you may need it again for something else...you DO own a Landy:D

I like the angle grinder idea haha, but where do you grind through it? If you cut around the groove, itll just leave half inside the box?

Location? There are a number of places that you can visit to do the job. I have the bearing plate separator, but it''s no good to you if you're not in SEQ.

No biggie.. any decent mechanic should have the gear - if you haven't already found this thread, the first photo should help describe what JC was saying.

I live just 20km from Tank, so that when I had to remove mine, I was able to use his puller.

It was like the one in your link complete with a hydraulic ram. It was rated as a 10 tonne puller and it only just did the job.

So there is another advantage of living on the glorious South Coast of NSW. :p

smack snot out of it with a cold chisel to expand it and then pull it off with a normal puller.

Its not a fun job if you dont have a 20t press and all the bits.

I'm pretty sure that I pulled all the bits around it off so there was no housing around it. Then basically cut one section out of it and used a cold chisel to finish the job. It was a couple of years ago now, but I recall it going something like that.
Whichever way, I used a grinder, a chisel, and got the job done.

The housing,(Extension housing) is held in BY the collar, as it is pressed up against the oil slinger. DO NOT belt it with at 90 degrees with a cold chisel etc as you will damage the Rear mainshaft output support roller bearing.

forgot to mention that I do the chiseling bit with the shaft supported in a specially drilled and cut block of wood with the weight of the box supported as well.

I only had problems getting the colar off the shaft.I had the extension housing off. I think I had to find a way of removing it as a way to get to the collar.
I DID ALL THIS WITHOUT A PRESS, AND WITH MINIMUL CHISILING. Most of the work was with the grinder, and spanners.

Edit: I was putting in a full overhaul kit, why would I be concerned with damaging a bearing?
