About to put the heads back on the Rangie :D:D

Went to local autopro and bought some new spark plugs. The bloke looked up the car in his book and brought out some NGK PFR5G-11 "Laser Platinum Premium" @ $26 each!! I bought them anyway.

Just looking up the application guides to confirm gap should be 0.9mm for these plugs and can't find the P38A listed.

Anyone had any experience with these plugs on a P38A?

cheers
Paul.

funny thing just happened... removed one of the old plugs from the old heads and it was a NGK PFR5G-11.

I can answer my own question now...:)

Still, your good/bad experiences with these plugs are welcome.

Paul,

Went to the NGK website. 1.1mm is the gap to set it to. Have a look in the spark plug settings on Rave and see what it recommends. Hopefully should be about the same.

I did the same for my RRC, and it came up the same as the workshop manual.

G'day Paul
If you try and alter the gap you're in danger of stuffing the precious metal layer on the electrode. The factory-set 1.1mm gap should be fine given the output from the coils.

suggestion: buy some dielectric grease and (sparingly) smear it around the sp's insulator prior to refitting the boot. The grease will make it easier to replace the boot and act as a sealant from moisture etc. It also reduces flashing and voltage leakage from the plug.

Super-not-so-cheap sell ?permatex brand dielectric grease in a tiny bubble for $4. something. (equates to close to $1000 /kg!!!)

I have recently tried good ol' Lanoline grease (the green stuff) ... its dielectric properties are as good as the Permatex stuff at a fraction of the price... Also used it on my LS1 commodore ... excellent results

thanks guys... luckily I read the label on the box that said not to adjust the gap...

will get some grease tomorrow

currently doing stage 2 of tightening head bolts... another 90deg yet!! I don't like this bit.

cheers

Cool, thanks Hoges. I feel better about it now. They do seem like a good plug and I don't mind spending top dollar if it means I'll get better performance/life out of them.

Cheers, paul.

Hi Sprint - please don't get me wrong... I do appreciate that you can supply a cheaper alternative... but I had already bought the NGK plugs when I put up the first post.
Cheers, Paul.

The NGK Iridiums are only about USD11plus on ebay from USA.
I fitted a set to my RRC 3.9 and they are great.

I read this last year (or whenever) and thought "you beauty I can smell a bargain".

Went to local holden dealers spares department who said "sir you are mistaken", end of conversation.

Only my experience in one location though... would be interested to know different as the fella was a bit of a tosser and I wouldn't mind telling him he was wrong!:angel::twisted:

I have previously gotten the platinum plug for $12 each but I was bulk buying for some mates. AFAIK the plug gap for all injected rover v8's is .8mm and .6mm for carbies.

Last time I bought new spark plugs I bought Bosch Platinum Plus.

They were quite a bit cheaper and I could buy them in SCA in packs of 4.

WR 8 DP

(Thats for Gems)

Seem to be fine, same performance as the Iridiums
