I put the new stepper motor in turned her on, idled like a dream, still spluttered out the exhaust but constant idle.

Turned off engine put the new AFM on, beautiful purring exhaust at constant idle. Pulled the AFM plug off there was a sound like a spark jumping engine died.

Put the plug back on, started engine and was back to the old spluttering exhaust.

Was I an idiot to pull the plug from the AFM while the engine was running? (I got the advise from this web site as a way to check the AFM was working).

Have I just killed my AFM, and am I going to have to get another one?:o

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting? See if it resets something? I wouldn't have thought the AFM would use enough power to make a "spark" sound. Sure somthing else isn't dead?

All seems OK.

I pulled the battery lead went for a coffee. Started her up - a bit lumpy through town. Drove to Liverpool and now she is sweet as a nut:D

Lets hope it lasts....

Not a good idea to pull it off when powered. Same goes for idle solenoid and anything else direct connected to the ECU as you can spike it.
Shouldnt have to pull battery lead, just unplug the ECU and leave it for a few minutes then re-connect.... ignition off of course....

Cheers
