I everyone

Now i have searched but can't find anything specific.

I'm wonder what reasonable and inexpensive high way tyre people would recommend....

I'm going to be moving soon which mean I will be embarking on an hours journey to work....I don't think its worth running the maxxis bighorns...they are to expensive to run out on the road. So as I have a second set of wheels thinking about fitting a highway tyre to them for the daily commuting.

looking at around the 245/70/16 mark

any suggestions.....

I used to commute on the M5 in the defender. Michelin xza 750-16 are through 70 000km and still heaps of tread left. Very quiet in comparison with the A/T that the machine was originally fitted with. Just adjust the tyre pressures to suite ride and driving style.

Cheers.

Michilin latitude.I had them on my disco and they were really quiet and lots of wet weather grip.I fitted continentals to the L322 and they have no equal, very exxy though.I have an older set of XCL's you can have for free if you take them of the rims,I'm driving over to NSW next friday and they are at my Hunter Valley property if you want a look. Cooper ART, good milage warranty, no noticeable road noise, good for beach driving and dry off roading.

You can even get the 245 70 R16 in Light Truck which gives you more milage and thicker side walls, but a slightly harder ride.

Hi pat Ian used to have xcl's on the 90 absolutely loved them said you couldn't kill them with a big stick....do you know how they handle on road? they got much tread on them?.

I know they are not made anymore which only makes it harder for a spare which is my line of thinking thats all

the bfg AT does surprisingly nicely and is very credible off road

The general grabber is also excelent value on road and surprisingly capable offroad especially on sand.

Off road is irrelevant though...just interesting in a good highway terrain if you know of any...I have offroad tyres so not looking for something that can tick all boxes..just the road boxes:)

i got some TERA TRACKS in Hawker, all the locals run them, i am very happy at 172 each fitted, they are standing up well with not even a cut in them from flinders, morgan etc. more of a highway thing but with quite an open tread

I found the Pirreli Scorpions to be excellent on road , I had them on disco when I first bought it.

Id suggest the HT version of the grabbers then if they're still available.

Toyo Opats.
Good price, fantastic on the road wet or dry and a very reasonable price. I have used them as have 4 other friends and all are happy with them. I got 100,000 kms from my set on the Rangie.

I am running Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on my Rangie. 245/70 16. In that size they are an LT construction. I find them to be an excellent road tyre and they are wearing well too.

I've found the General Grabbers excellent on the Defender with 80 + thousand so far and lots left.

Sorry DB cheap and good doesn't necessarily compute.

Toyos - I'm currently running Toyo Open Country H/T 255/65R16 on the Disco with 8 inch wide rims and previously had 235/70R16 with 7 inch rims which were very good.

I have got 100,000km out of my General Grabbers (on the Defender) very happy with them. (I drive about an hour to/from work too - mostly highway). (Probably another 10 to 20,000km left in them)

I don't think they are that cheap but compared to the crappy korean tyres I bought for the disco they are much better value - $ per km

If you are looking for ROAD tyres, have a look at the US websites for the UQTG rating. This will give you an idea if the distance they will cover before they are likely to need replacing, the heat rating and the grip rating (like in a format of 440 A B). That is 4.4 times further than the reference tyre and very good heat dispersion and average grip.
If you look at the Coopers website, you may see the CS4 model of tyres and note that is (if memory serves) 700 A A - check it though as i have a terrible memory! This is one of the best AWD road tyres there is! Check to see the available sizes and find a dealer for a local price.
I have Lattitude Tour HP which are 440AB. Excellet so far, Coopers were not available when I got them for my S1 Disco.
Good Luck

took some pics. 31" on 15" rims 245s. the 31" works a bit better with a NA isusu on the road. as i already said they work well and are unmarked after playing on the sharp stuff, and thats with other vehicles cutting down to the wire on BF AT

From memory I paid about $230 each for mine.

How much is your vehicle / life / neighbours kid worth?

Don't skimp on tyres, they are the only thing joining you to the road!

who said I was skimping...geez I only asked for a reasonably good inexpensive tyre.

to be honest i could go and spend 1500 on a set of tyres that's not going to stop the bloke next to me crashing into me with his 70 dollar a corner jobs on his car....just cause they are expensive dont always make them great. I for ever have people telling me that certain tyres are not what they are cracked up to be and your paying the bux for the brand name....

thats why I want real life experience not marketing hype

just so there is no confusion..I'm not say pireli's are crap merely saying that just because there is a tyre out there that maybe cheaper doesn't automatically make it bad...

last time I was quoted on prireli's it was 290 a tyre...although that was a couple of years ago now..

I haven't but a tyre guy in the club said that the only tyre he can recommend is bf goodrich......and the next one would be Nexan

I run Michelin Latitude Tour HP's on my every day road rims and couldn't be happier. They are very quiet and grip well in the wet. I also found them to be excellent on sand when we were at Fraser Island last year.

There is also a new Michelin tyre called Latitude Cross that's supposed to give a bit more A/T style off road traction. It looks very H/T biased though.

toyo open country h/t's in the LT235/85x16 are $225 fitted and balanced up this way...

coopers same size and style are over $270 a pop.

Lou, I got a 90+% set (4) of Hankook Dynapro HT 235 70 16 106H rating from TRS about 6 months ago to replace cheapies we had on Delilah (D2A).

Cost $460 (for 4!) delivered to Melb from Adelaide, $60 to fit & balance at Bob Jane. Perhaps $240 each new?? Good saving, I reckon.

Progress report - quiet, great in wet or dry, don't squirm much. They're even OK on the beach with the pressures down. I would recommend them for highway work.

HTH

Pete

ps I agree with Inc. I have 225 75 16 Open Country HT on the RRC, and they're pretty good.
