Fuel Consumption 2a Petrol

I took advantage of the trip to the Expo to check the fuel consumption on the Series 2a 109 petrol.

Driving both ways to Castle Hill, with the front hubs unlocked, keeping pretty close to the speed limit where possible, I avoided using the overdrive going to Castle Hill and used it where it seemed a good idea on the way back (mostly splitting the ratio between 3 and 4). Distance close to exactly 350km.

Fuel consumption was 16l/100km on the way there, 17.8 on the way back. I think the main reason for the difference was the headwind.

Before the trip I ensured all wheel bearings were correctly adjusted and that no brakes were dragging at all.

For that fuel usage information. As I was wondering what kms I may expect out of a 10 gallon tank from my 2a, as I am taking it on the Land Rover Outback Heritage Drive. Looks like I will need to carry some extra fuel.

You could expect to get a bit better if you keep the speed down (much of the trip was at 100kph), and less aggressive tyres than mine would help, although these were at 35psi, well above book figures. Having an 8:1 head instead of my 7:1 would also help. And of course, the engine should be in tune (mine is).

Interesting figures John. About the same as we used to get out of our V8 Stage 1. Our S11A (SWB) on the trip to Corowa achieved around 14l/100. As you say, speed alters the figures and most of our travelling was done at 70 to 80kph, as we find this to be the most comfortable.

Yes, speed makes a big difference, and I expect the strong wind made quite a difference too - it was a crosswind for most of the trip to sydney and about half the trip back, requiring a good quarter turn of the wheel to go straight, and then pretty much a headwind for most of the rest of the trip home, with wind speeds mostly 60+kph.

I've calculated the fuel consumption for the last trip up to Cameron Corner (2000 miles) and an earlier one this year to Bourke/Darling River Run (1400 miles) and found in both cases I averaged out to 15L/100KM.

On both of these trips, fueld consumption on the highways was a fair bit higher than when on unsealed roads. With around 25-30% better consumption off road. On both trips about 1/2 was on unsealed roads/tracks.

With the roof top tent, Arthur has a pretty high profile and really struggles in a headwind, barely able to get to 70kph and happier to sit on 65kph in these types of conditions. In a headwind the overdrive is unusable, just not enough power. We're also loaded up with extra fuel, water and gear so not extactly light. Fair to say we don't overtake too many others on the road.

Yet on unsealed tracks consumption was great. Speeds were typically below 60kph, and a reasonable amount of 3rd gear work too.

I've reconditioned the carbie (and fuel pump), so I figure that might be a positive factor.

When I remember, I also put in Morey's Upper Cylinder Lubricant. But that doesn't appear to factor much in consumption from what I can tell.

G'day, I am building up a 2A 88" and am in delemma about which carbie to stick on. does anyone have any ideas on performance vs economy for various carbs? Dave

Will you be taking your car offroad much? If so, it would be hard to go past the Zenith...

Although we have a Solex on ours, general consensus seems to favour the Zenith. This is a conundrum I face, as the Solex needs attention, but I also have a Zenith which I could rebuild.

I would go a Zentih it has less parts so in theroy should less to go wrong, also there not as compliacted as a Solex.
The Zentih also flows more CFM then a Solex as it has a better disign.
