Can anybody help ? My '96 130 has had a very loud and concerning tappety noise 3 times now coupled with poor brakes . After times 1 and 2 it was found that a loss of vacuum to the brake booster is the reason for the poor brakes. So after searching this site I found that the vacuum pumps do fail with simalar symptoms to what is happening to my truck. So I purchased a new Wabco brake vacuum pump and fitted it on tuesday , all good. Untill today , it happened again exactly the same symptoms . :confused:The noise and accompanying loss of brakes came and went a couple of minutes later of it's own accord. Could the new pump be faulty also ? I'm at a loss to explain what else it could be. Anybody got any ideas ?

Have you inspected where the master cylinder attaches to the brake booster ? It is a common problem for hairline cracks to appear there.

No i have not but will right now. will this cause the bad rattly noise in the engine though ?

Yes the brake booster does have a crack where the master cylnder bolts up. The noise definately comes from the engine and there is no vacuum at the pipe that goes to the brake vacuum pump.

There was a post on here very recently about someone who also bought a new wabco pump and had it fail VERY quickly, there was a question raised about a bad batch of pumps?
If there is no vacuum at the pump, then it's shot I'm afraid.

This problem is intermittant. It's all good untill the noise turns up. Wasn't the bad batch of brake vacuum pumps for the puma or am I mistaken ?

Not got a lot to do with a 96 defender though:confused:

I'm assuming you have already checked your brake pads!

Yep pads all good. The problem is an intermittant horrible rattly noise comeing from the engine and no vacuum from the brake vacuum pump. Pump replaced with new one but have had the exact same symptoms occur again. Could this be something other than the brake vacuum pump ?

Have you checked wheel bearings? have had these cause poor braking where you needed to pump brakes for them to work?

the noise could definitely be bearings I reckon dont know about the missing brakes though sorry

Nose is definately from the engine when the problem is occuring , the rattly noise speeds up and slows down with engine rpm.

perhaps there is two separate things going on?
have you had your head under the bonnet to hear the area where the noise is coming from with someone blipping the throttle.

Yes I have been under the bonnet whilst revving the engine and checking for vacuum at the booster. Sound definately in engine and linked to loss of vacuum.

Could an intermittent vacuum leak cause the pump to get very noisy because a lot more air than usual is going through it?

So are you saying that the sound is IN the engine......???
thats why I was asking can you isolate where the sound was coming from I, meant in the engine bay.
is the sound coming from the the area of the vacuum pump?

Yes sound is coming from engine around vacuum pump area. As vacuum pump has been replaced and same fault occured with both pumps could it be something other than the vacuum pump ? I have looked at a breakdown of that area on RAVE cd and pump works straight off cam shaft lobe. My theory is the plunger/follower in the pump is getting stuck in and the noise is the cam lobe tapping on the pump plunger/follower. If this is the case why has this occured on both the old and new pumps.

Perhaps you got a dud,
see this post (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/77619-lifespan-300tdi-brake-vacuum-pump.html#post961512).
BTW, I was just going from memory re the other thread, I remembered it was a defender, but didn't realise it was a puma!

The original pump failed on my '97 130 at around 200,000km. The next two pumps failed very quickly after being fitted. And yes a loud tappety noise that coresponds with engine revs. No intermittance though, just failure and a rock hard pedal. All oem pumps. The mechanic measured things up and packed the current one out by, from memory 8 or so mm. many km down the track ... no further trouble...yet. Don.

I made a few calls and there looks to be a bad batch in oz with k08 at the end of there serial number, steer clear of them waebco models there's a faulty plunger breaking in them, I've managed to confirm that with four resources in oz
