    Horrible noise and poor brakes.

Can anybody help ? My '96 130 has had a very loud and concerning tappety noise 3 times now coupled with poor brakes . After times 1 and 2 it was found that a loss of vacuum to the brake booster is the reason for the poor brakes. So after searching this site I found that the vacuum pumps do fail with simalar symptoms to what is happening to my truck. So I purchased a new Wabco brake vacuum pump and fitted it on tuesday , all good. Untill today , it happened again exactly the same symptoms . The noise and accompanying loss of brakes came and went a couple of minutes later of it's own accord. Could the new pump be faulty also ? I'm at a loss to explain what else it could be. Anybody got any ideas ?

Have you inspected where the master cylinder attaches to the brake booster ? It is a common problem for hairline cracks to appear there.

Yes the brake booster does have a crack where the master cylnder bolts up. The noise definately comes from the engine and there is no vacuum at the pipe that goes to the brake vacuum pump.

There was a post on here very recently about someone who also bought a new wabco pump and had it fail VERY quickly, there was a question raised about a bad batch of pumps?
If there is no vacuum at the pump, then it's shot I'm afraid.

    Cheers,

This problem is intermittant. It's all good untill the noise turns up. Wasn't the bad batch of brake vacuum pumps for the puma or am I mistaken ?

I'm assuming you have already checked your brake pads!

Yep pads all good. The problem is an intermittant horrible rattly noise comeing from the engine and no vacuum from the brake vacuum pump. Pump replaced with new one but have had the exact same symptoms occur again. Could this be something other than the brake vacuum pump ?
