Car in garage - not fault codes to identify anything in particular
Any suggestions

The D2 ... If you don't have the Dizzy cap with leads ... then you have a crank angle sensor ... It has most probably failed

Dear Mike
they are looking at the crank angle sensor - hopefully we are on the right track

Those sensors can just fail - not common but can happen (like any bloody electronic sensor on modern cars!)...and unless you have one in the glovebox and are handy its a bit of a problem. Anyway hopefully that should be it...does it do it on both LPG and petrol?

Alan,
When the crank angle sensor dies the tacho drops. If you can get the car to cough and fire and the tacho doesn't move i'd change it.
I have seen one 4.6ltr V8 that had the crank angle sensor mount break away from the engine block. That cause intermittent rough running and lose of power....
It should take a competent spark/mech about 5 mins to diagnose a faulty crank angle senor
