Went for what turned out to be a quick run out to glasshouse yesterday..

3/4 of the way up a rutted hill.. the rear uni let go and and sent me back down into a bit of a tree.. lucky the tree was there though, as she probably would of rolled as it was starting to go sideways a bit on the way down..

I had only replaced the rear uni's a couple of months ago, but probably gave it too many berries on the way up.:(

Damage wasn't as bad as what i first thought.. smashed the rear light and the force creased the rear side panel in..

Heres a few quick pics..

The most interesting part of the whole day was after it happened I only had front wheel drive and had to get back out of the area I was in.. I tried several times to get up this rather easy hill but it would just keep spinning the front (even with the air locker in)

Ended up trying it in reverse hoping the weight over the front wheels would be enough to get that bit of extra traction.. It worked a treat:D

Another fun day at Glasshouse and few more battle scars Mikey.

Hows the rims? Offset Ok?

Good to see you were able to drive it home, I was only talking with you the other day about damaging rear drive flange and driving home with only front wheel drive. You went one better and smashed the Uni :( .

Is the tail shaft still useable?

A is the failure point. looks clean but thats where it started.

B top 2 threads on the grease nipple seem a bit bright, that may been some thing or may not. ether way it started where the thread is cut for the grease nipple. a good argument not to use grease-able unis i think

Good reason to only buy Hardi Spicer uni joints:)

Yeh, i reckon it should buff out:p..

The rims are perfect mate.. They clear the rear spring mounts but still slightly touch the radius arms on full lock.. but I can live with that

I might take the tail shaft in to get checked cause there is a bit of damage on the end where it snapped, I think it was just from it spinning around hitting the underneath of the 4by... Hopefully its not too bad

They are pricey, but that's putting you over a barrel:eek:

Years ago, I had a shaft that had been made from 3 pieces of tube and would flog unis, snap some brands, as above, the only uni that would last was Hardi spicer and I tried numerous sorts from my local parts supplier

I didn;t make the shaft:p

Are the hardy splicer uni's greasable?... If not, do they still last as long as greasable ones . ( if driven normally:p)

Most all are greasable that I've purchased, although I've used them for "other" things and they haven;t had a nipple

Normally!........:D

Not sure of the brand mate.. But i did get it from Mr automotive...

I don't really think it was the uni's fault.. i was giving it a fair hiding up the hill... i'm suprised it lasted as long as it did:angel:

as i circled in the photo, there was a fault there before it broke. the reason for the fault is ether in the cutting of the thread for the grease nipple or an inclusion, i suspect the former but with out it in my hand etc etc
