Front Door latch Removal - 1985 County

The manual says "remove the screw", but I cannot see a screw. I seem to have a later version. Is there a trick to getting these off? (of course I am chasing rust at the bottom of the door).

I have attached a picture. there are two plastic inserts that fit around the outside of the latch and these are missing, but you can see that with the door latch pulled out, there is no screw! there is a plastic insert at the RH end, but I am not game to really put that under pressure to remove it until I understand what I need to do to remove the door latch assembly.

You need to remove the door trim panel before you can remove the latch. But I suspect that is what you are trying to do! To do this you need to remove the plastic trim around the latch.

This is in two parts, split horizontally at the mid point. The two parts of the trim slide up and down - start them by levering in the join or at the top and bottom between the trim and the latch body. You may find that pushing in on the door trim panel helps them to move.
