Prop shaft UNI Joint help please.

So what I thought would be an easy job I think I've stuffed up.:(
I've removed both drive shafts, and removed the uni joints completely from the front one. I can't do more work on it until tomorrow, but in the mean time I've read up a bit, and realized I should have marked stuff first for reassembly:o What should I have marked, and what do I do now? Is it a 1 in 4 chance of positioning it right now? I haven't pulled the shafts apart at the slider part, and don't intend to.
The UNI joints had something like BGR and GKM written on both halves, so I've put them back together(half done)with those letters lining up, but I guess they're nothing but part numbers.

There's nothing to worry about in regards to lining anything up.

If you're fitting greasable unis, get the nipples lined up so it's easy to grease them. That's all you need to worry about.


The only thing that should be marked before pulling apart is the sliding joint.

Yeah as Scouse has said, the slip joint is the only thing that needs to be marked, it has to be put back in the right spline position;)

and the UNIs are different sizes for each end(of the car) :(

That's a new one to me :confused:. My 87 RR has all 4 the same.

Perhaps someone can check the part numbers, I had two different brand after market ones, I guess there's a chance the bearing sizes were different, I only measured the UNI stars, not the outside of the bearing shells. I was also told they were different sizes.

I think that the later defender prop shafts have a bigger uni with a slightly wider joint to provide a greater angle they can work across. I am sure I have seen pics on another thread on here.

This is on a early Disco 1(91).
The more I think about it the more I wonder if the seller either didn't know, or was spinning me a tarn. He sold me two different types of UNIs, one didn't have grease nipples(I doubt this is relivant, although it may well be the reason for the longer cross section of the star). Both had same diameter bearing shell). When I put one type in one end and the toher type in the other end of the same shaft, one ended up being a bit loose feeling, and this is what got me to ask the seller the question, and he stated they were different for each end(explained the looseness). I'm lazy so I've left it in there for now, and I'll see how it goes, I have a replacement for it(the other type).
Perhaps one is meteric the other imperial.
The stars were 3mm different in length.

Oh well, at least I have a spare now. and I'll pass on the info to the guy that sold them to me.
Having a different part number from this after market brand wouldn't have anything to do with not having room for the grease nipples would it?

The part number might be different for non greasable nipples but I'd prefer to fit greasables if going off road.
