View Full Version : Lucas 2 button fob to replace Valeo fob/key?

G'day all,

Being new to this forum, I'm hoping someone can assist in answering a question that I'm sure has been raised in the past.

As the owner of a D2 TD5, my ignition key incorporates a 2 button Valeo fob - of which I only have one.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/12/1041.jpg
I’m in need of a second key but am not keen on paying the $400 plus being charged by Land Rover stealers.

Being an Australian delivered vehicle I know that my system is operating at 315mHz, so can I therefore use a brand new Lucas 315mHz 2 button fob and a separate key?
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/12/1042.jpg
I understand that programming the 2 button systems can only be achieved by stealer with testbook (unlike the D1 single button systems that can be programmed with a sequence key turns and door/bonnet locks), but this should cost less than $100. Coupled with a $40 for the new fob & $10 for a key blank, this works out to be a fraction of the cost for a Valeo 2 button key/fob combo.

I look forward to any responses.

Early D2s were 315MHz then they changed to 433MHz.

Along with the remote, you need to make sure it comes with the barcode too.

(Just wasted 15 min of my life replying to your message, only to have it disappear when I was logged out!!)
Thanks for your quick response Scott.
I’m probably showing my profound ignorance, but is my understanding of the security system flawed?
I thought the key barcode was only necessary if the vehicle could not be accessed (ie all keys either lost or no longer functioning). The barcode could then be entered into the "Testbook" to allow synchronisation of the fob with the vehicles security system?
As I have a fully functioning key and can therefore turn on the ignition, doesn’t this mean that the "Testbook" will communicate with the vehicle security system – negating the need for the barcode?
I was of the understanding that once in "learn" mode the vehicles security system scans the 315 mHz frequency for valid codes (which are then mapped to the security system memory)? Pressing the "Lock" button first followed by the "Unlock" button of the first fob programs the 2 functions; and then up to 4 fobs (was only 2 for the single button D1 fobs) can be subsequently programmed, but they must all be programmed in the one "learn" session?
I certainly don’t want to waste money on a Lucas fob if the programming cannot be done, but more importantly I don’t want to look a fool by presenting my Lucas fob to a Landy Stealer with a task that simply cannot be performed!
I welcome any input on the subject. Should my endeavours prove successful, I’m sure many will benefit with savings of around $300 a pop!
Thanks again

Rolf

There are 2 barcodes with a new key. One is the key's ID the other is to presync it to the BCU unit. These are programmed in to the BCU with Testbook or Rovacom etc software.

The other fob you've shown is from the Lucas10AS unit fitted to D1 and Td5/Puma Defenders. This can operate on the same frequency as the D2 but sends an entirely different code and does not need to be authorised on the BCU. It won't work with the Valeo unit in the D2.

Thanks for putting me on the straight and narrow.

Given that a Lucas fob won't work with the Valeo system, is there a cheaper option than purchasing a $400 plus key from a stealer??

You could try a few of the wreckers, problem is they know what a new one is worth.

Can a secondhand Valeo key/fob be synchronised to my vehicle security system without the necessary barcodes?

Rolf,

I have just received a new key from the UK. $173.00 landed in Australia.
Approx $5.00 to have the blank cut. Was able the program it with my Nanocom. Try here.

Thanks David, $173 certainly beats the $400 plus asked by the Landy stealers !

Do you know if there is anyone in Melbourne that hires out Nanocoms or similar diagnostic machines?

HEAPS of us TD5 owners have a Nanocom, they are really a must have.
There is a list of owners willing to help others with their Nanocom in the Electronic Diagnostics forum.

Thanks for all your help Andrew.

From what I've read a Nanocom might be a late entry for my Christmas wish list, but apparently they are not easily come by. In the mean time I'll check out the list you've steered me towards.

Cheers

By the by, where did you get $400 for a new key from? When I needed one a few years back it was $295 and I got an even better deal than that thanks to someone on the forum.

I noticed these replacement key outer casings. Has anyone tried one of these. It is normally only the buttons which fall apart. For $37, possibly a repair for the usless second key.

Land Rover Discovery 2 Remote Key SILICONE BUTTONS PAD - eBay Keyless Entry Remote, Safety, Security, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. This is an Ebay link and will probably disappear shortly. The reference was from "WESPLAS" Power Seller. who sells many similar items.

Even Australian made?

ULR in Malvern, Melbourne quoted $395 for the key, then it has to be coded and cut at an additional cost.

As luck would have it, the only key I have fell apart with the rubber buttons perishing and falling apart. I purchased the silicon buttons and fitted them just last week!

I choked on my Weet-bix having to pay $37 for what amounts to a tiny piece of silicon, but it certainly did the trick, looks ok, works fine and being silicon should last a long time.

Thanks for your kind offer!

I'm currently in correspondence with a retailer in the UK (he has requested my VIN to ensure I get the right key) - Once I've procured the correct key I'd very much like to arrange a suitable time to reprogram my vehicle security system.

I'm located in Greensborough and my mobile No. is 0421 872 009. If you would provide me with your number, I'll give you a bell once I'm ready to go ahead.

Cheers

Bundalene,

I have just received one of the replacement buttons you mentioned.

Work very well.

Added the below in General Chat.

Instead of buying a new key fob because the buttons have perished, order replacement buttons from Polmex in WA. Cost $33.00 delivered. I wish I had knownabout this before I ordered one from the UK

Item Code: 1LDPad

Does that mean you have a spare fob Dave?
I'd love to try and program my Defender to use remote locking, immobiliser etc....
Would you be interested in parting with it?

Cheers,
Fraser

As I have an early D2 ('99) I needed a 315 mHz Valeo key/fob and found a brand new unit on ebay for US$104.90 delivered.

This is almost half the cost of the same item from the UK and around a third of the price being charged here in the land of Oz.

If anyone else is interested, the seller has a further 4 available at that price, just follow the link below.
