It's called a 'beauty dish'. It just fits over the head of my flash gun and makes lighting like this..

Basically it came about after a 7" stainless steel mixing bowl became redundant when I bought the missus a complete new set for her birthday. Using a Milo tin lid, a crappy stubby holder and some unwanted kid's mechano bits, the design pretty much just came together by itself. The only items that really cost anything were the 6 dremel cutoff wheels I used up cutting the rectangle out of the back of the dish. (That thing it tough!)
Hope you like it. :)

Mixing bowl... I thought it was a dog bowl and was wondering what the poor pooch is eating out of now!
Next you'll be igniting a lump of extra fine steel wool shoved into a lightbulb globe with a spark triggered by the camera;)
What power setting do you use with this?

I just use it on automatic. The TTL metering still works fine. The only time it gets really upset is if the flash head is lifted up into a 'bounce' position instead of remaining in the 'direct' position. It will over-expose then. The flash has to be reasonably close (1-2m) for the soft light effect though.

Would you take some before/after shots with the same flash unit so we can compare the two?

No worries. Here's a series of different setups for comparison.
Direct flash (on camera)

Bounce off ceiling (on camera) - 8.5' white ceiling

Mine too but I don't usually have a 8.5' white ceiling that I can carry around with me. :)

Why not flash powder?
I used to think it was great stuff. You could buy cloth bags of flash powder from the old Camco store in the Haymarket end of Pitt St. Good for parties. Place a modest amount into an ash tray and wait for the fun.:wasntme:

And probably safer, than a length of magnesium ribbon around the two pins on a 240v plug, and then waiting for someone to turn it on :o:o
