Does this towball Land Rover Defender or Series Dixon-Bate Tow Hitch - eBay Tow Bars, Exterior, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 17-Jan-10 17:08:26 AEDST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270513046862&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:AU:1123) bolt directly onto the rear bar?

I'm looking to change my current hitch as it hangs a little low.

You can bolt that one anywhere-might not be legal though.
My series3 had one bolted to drop plate from original tow bar, also one on front bar. Good around farm.
Collectors price? I've a couple for sale if thats what they're worth-though different make.
I reckon you'd have to plate inside of crossmember & use spacers on bolts to use for serious towing or recovery

I too don't think they are legal and I can only talk for Queensland.
Anybody?
John.

My 90 has one of these, it was in place when it went through its NSW RTA importation inspection so I don't think its illegal, not in NSW anyway, they also carry a land rover part No. I would agree with Brett that plating the rear cross member would be a good idea.

its legal providing its adequatley mounted.

I dont rate them (the combo one on ebay) for use with lunette rings but they do make an excellent combined tow ball and recovery point.

Yeh it is a mantec wheel carrier. Opens with the door. Very good quality one . Had no problems with it and has been in the car 7 years now

Reads90 - thanks for that. my mistake as I thought that your rear door dropped down (as in a ute back). I was wondering how it locked onto the door (as in how it worked on a drop back). I'm considering a Puma 110 twin cab HCPU and wondered about shifting the spare from inside the pick up back to the outside.

I'm not even sure that it's a Dixon Bates. I thought Dixon Bates either just had the jaw with no tow ball, or the jaw and tow ball as part of the casting.

I didn't think they had the tow ball as part of the pin, but I might be wrong.:)

Cheers, LandieMan

Ranga,
The same design hitch is still available in the UK, the ebay one looked like an older version.
Dixon-Bate Web Site - Universal Couplings (http://www.dixonbate.co.uk/Towing/universal.asp)

The 2 bolt flange mounting hitch is a standard in the UK , or at least was about 12 years ago.
Witter Towbars (http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/accessories/accessorylist.aspx?T=9)

From memory you fitted a thicker drop plate to the bolt holes in the rear crossmember on a Series LR and then bolted the hitch to that, although looking at the Witters website the mounting is now a little more substantial.

No problems with towing heavy loads, in fact when I arrived in Australia I thought the Australian tow ball looked weak in comparison. It just depends what you're used to......
