OK, here’s a situation with KEYLESS START vehicles and how do you get around it.
My wife wants to pick up some groceries but the D4 needs some fuel.
She unlocks the D4 and drops the key in her hand bag ( 1st mistake ) but wants me to drop her off at the supermarket and so I can then continue on to the serve.
I jump in the driver's seat and drop her off at the supermarket ( 2nd mistake ) and go to servo, about a K or so away.
I arrive at the servo and turn the motor off ( 3rd mistake ).
I fuel the D4 and go to lock it so I can go and pay for the fuel.
NO KEY.
I can’t drive the D4.
I can’t lock it.
And I’m now anything but popular as I have the bowser blocked.
Any suggestions?

You need a Key Master, and a Gate Keeper.

This is what Mrs Drivesafe is probably writing on another forum

I unlock the D4 and drops the key in my hand bag where I know they will be easy to find ( 1st mistake )

I'm now waiting at the supermarket with my ice cream melting because the selfish git obviously went to the bloody pub once he filled up!!

Has it happened? Or a hypothetical?

Sounds like he's still got the servo blocked, and she's stuck at Woolies.:p

Thank god, ( for my sake ) it hasn’t happened ( yet ), but it was just a warning the dealer gave us as we were going through the handover demo.
The point is, and I think I can safely say, with the way this thread is going, that I’m not going to get an answer as to whether there is a way to protect against such a thing happening and being the way the forumites on this site behave, if it did happen, the problem is not that it happened but how to live it down with you lot, once you found out about it happening.:D

So you haven’t dtest driven a D4 yet?

Since it's a serious question, Drivesafe, I'd say the only answer is to (a) have your own key and (b) always carry it on your person. Presumably the widget is small and light enough to pose no serious penalty? Add it to a keyring you always carry or get a pocket-watch belt pouch to keep it in, maybe on a lanyard of some sort. The wife can have her own key, always in the bottom of the soundproof handbag.

The correct answer is you pay attention to the frantic warning beeps the D4 gives you when you drive out of range of the key, and the range is only about 1m from the door, it'll be out of range even if the key is placed on the front bumper.

so Robert,, does this mean at normal fuel stops the car will beep at you unless you lock it?

No. With keyless vehicles (Toyotas operate the same way) if I'm the sole driver I keep the key in my pocket at all times. The car is locked by pressing the small black button on any doorhandle including the rear door on the D4. The car is unlocked when you pull the doorhandle AND the key is within the proximity zone. Therefore, the key never needs to leave your pocket which is very convenient. A common mistake people make with keyless ops is using the key as a press-button remote to lock the car; it's not really a mistake, but it's not the easiest way to lock it.
You only get a beep if you drive off and exceed the key's prox zone. Another advantage of a keyless operation is that you don't get the warning bongs about the key being in the ignition and the driver's door open, and in fact the bongs are quieter on the D4 than the D3.
If the engine is switched off you can take the key as far away as you want without locking the vehicle. It will only alert you if the engine is running, maybe with the ignition set to II but I can't recall that.
I am a big fan of keyless operations as they are much easier to live with than keyed.
