I am considering purchase of 2006-2008 D3 TDV6, but was told that later model auto gearboxes are sealed & considered a no-service item.
If this is true how do you check & change oil? if used for serious offroad or towing as I do I don't think gearbox would last long is unserviceable.
Thanks,
Bruce

Its just a ZF,, pull the plug on the side to check,
service as per previous models.

There is a previous thread on this in here somewhere,,,,

Thanks guys I guess that answers my question. It would certainly be a dumb move to seal an auto gearbox especially in a 4x4.

If it hasn't been used for regular towing , then leave it until it's
well in 6 figures . The wrong oil will stuff it bigtime so be careful who
services your 26hp trans..............

MAKE SURE that the motor is running when removing the side plug or you will wear a lot of oil:eek: The oil needs to be pumping through the gearbox with the box in neutral and the motor running AND the temperature of the oil should be between 30C and 50C:o to check the level. Good oil should be clear but if coffee coloured you need to do a double flush. I spoke to ZF and said my vehicle with all accessories and loaded for a trip is close to GVM and they said 'that is the same as towing'. The ZF website says that if Towing, high speeds or temperatures, then the oil should be changed at 80-120,000km. I did mine at 70,000km after the Cape York trip as it was dark coffee coloured :( The oil is expensive:mad:

Try getting the oil from a BMW dealer it is apparently cheaper.
