I went to 2 plumbing supplies today looking for those Brass plugs to replace the plastic radiator ones.
None of the places I tried had the Flanged headed plugs.
( No, I know I can get them at some Land Rover places) But I wish to know what they are originally made for.

but i am not quite that rude,
you can get them from most land rover repairers or maintainers.

The plugs you'll find at the plumbing stores will almost always be a tapered thread. So the further you screw it in, the tighter it gets.
The plugs for the radiator will be a parallel thread, so it screws in all the way, and relies on the head and washer for a seal.

The plumbers tapered brass plugs work fine and are cheap and easy to get.
They work well on a R380 gearbux oil filler plug too.

you lot are ****ing joking,
the disco plastic plugs seal with an o ring under the head, and are a special plug, they look just like the plastic plug
[which, by the way, are ok, until you stuff them undoing them with the wrong tool]
but are made of brass.
to put a tapered plug from a plumbing supplies into a straight thread hole is stupid.
save your money, and buy the right thing from a land rover supply mob.
and if you don't
don't call me when your radiator is rooted on the birdsville track

Sounds like they are BSPP which is a parallel thread used for mechanical fastening and which does not seal on the threads. You need a flanged plug with a gasket, fibre or copper washer, or o-ring to make the seal. BSPT is a tapered thread which seals on the thread usually with a liquid sealant, plumber's hemp or teflon tape applied to the thread.

Sorry Harry, but I for one would not joke about the crap plasic plugs installed by L/R.
The one on the thermostat housing split on mine before it had ever been undone before. And when its head comes off its a fair bugger to get the screwed body out, especially on the road somewhere.
I was lucky, caught it at the moment it split assunder (clouds of steam out the bonnet edges) but the roadside fix was a different matter.
Fortunately we had been visiting friends in Tamworth (happened on Moombie hill) and the mobile phone saved the day.
And it would not have been the "radiator rooted" either, would have been a head gasket minimum.
Happy motoring.

Sounds like you're sorted now but you can get the parallel type with an O-ring seal from some pneumatic suppliers. You just have to watch that the O-ring material is suitable for the temperature.
I work in the pneumatics industry and we have to change our O-rings from NBR to Viton for this application. O-ring is under the head in a groove so that it is retained
Plug is shown at the end of this thread :-
