View Full Version : Adjusting the Auto Shift Lever

My auto transmission shift lever doesn't quite sit in the correct position a lot (most/all) of the time. Sometimes I can't engage 1st unless I shift down hard.

Other times, reverse is somewhere between R and N and won't lock in until I jiggle it around a bit. Same in D. A bit of a worry if I take off and the car is sort-of in D but could jump to N.

I found the adjustment nut up under the car, but can't seem to get it right.

Your suggestions and experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers
Paul.

Might be a rubber mount broken or moved underneath somewhere?
I had a similar thing happen once and turned out to be an engine mount on the way out caused movement, glad I picked it up before it broke.
Cheers, Pete.

Without the special tool, it's a bit of a fiddle. I had to adjust mine as I couldn't get 1st in Low range. I think I backed the nuts right off, manually selected the gear at the switch, then set the gear lever in the matching position. and locked up the nuts.
