Are you like me and surf around on Google Earth, either to plan a trip or just dream?

Well I have just been introduced to Bing Maps.

Find maps, driving directions and business listings - Bing Maps Australia (http://bingmaps.com.au/index.aspx?action=location&location=%20sydney)

Select "Bird's Eye". :o

Just thought I'd share that.

For those in SA there's the official gov't mapping site, quite good I think:

Welcome to NatureMaps (http://www.naturemaps.sa.gov.au/)

I believe other states have similar sites, could be worth looking for.

Neither can I. The bird's eye view tab is also greyed out.

Click on aerial view to get the real view, but it still isn't very clear.
I think google earth still has it over this one IMO (at least for Perth).

Yes agree in AU only major cities, but lots of international birds-eye stuff to view. Oh well, I found it interesting:angel:

Can't see that new Defender though...:D

Edit: Yeah not that great:mad: - the link didn't work. Meant to be Valiant Way - Solihull, England

Yes the "bird's eye" has a better view of important places (Sorry Ron and Shonk:p) than google but I must agree google is far easier to navigate.

DJ, This is brilliant - very up to date in our area as well.

I am trying to figure out our visitors on the 19th November 2009.

DJ, certainly a good one for Perth too.

Best detail I have seen and I love the way you can jump around in time! :D

That NearMaps site is good enough to see if there are gates or trees down across tracks and snags on creek crossings :D

Tried it. Data quality is markedly inferior to Google maps. Birds eye greyed out. Data is also several years older than Google - Google is about 2005, Bing about 1995. (All this of course on my location. Map data is similar quality to Google, but has data gaps - I don't mean roads are missing (some are), but patches of the map go blank when you zoom in, so that roads visible at a smaller scale disappear. Some National Park boundaries are clearly wrong by well over a kilometre.

All in all, quite unimpressed!

Generally I think you have to go a long way to get a better 'overall' view than google

Nearmap has very good resolution mapping for some areas but generally it is very poor away from major areas.

As for 'Bing' zoom levels are not as good as google and whilst I can see my place, move 500m to the east and there is NO aerial photography and I would consider myself to be close to Sydney.

It's hopeless - only goes to 150m (or so it sys) height. Can't hardly see any detail of my block so no idea when photo was taken. Google is better as far as I can see (literally).

Data varies John. The google of my house is 3 years old and the Bing only a few months.

And for those that use GoogleMV and the like to download maps. Where Google specifically discourages this by banning your IP. Nearmaps specifically allows it for private use.

Good for those in Perth, because Nearmaps is based in Perth. Use Trekbuddy (http://trekbuddyatlasc.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html). It has support for downloading Nearmaps built in

I am sorry, but I have to correct you. You are referring to "TrekBuddy Atlas Creator" not to TrekBuddy. TrekBuddy is a J2ME program for displaying maps.

BTW: "TrekBuddy Atlas Creator" has been renamed to "Mobile Atlas Creator" on month ago: Mobile Atlas Creator (http://mobac.dnsalias.org/)

Yeah, your right thought the URL I referred to still contains a reference to 'TrekBuddy'. BTW why does someone on their first post here bother to comment on this - are you associated with Mobile Atlas Creator (formerly known as TrekBuddy Atlas Creator). If so, nice piece of work.
