Ah the academics. My dad, retired mathematician, wrote a series of papers with his cronies, titled something like oscillation of a flexible cylinder.
They consisted of speculations about the frequency of up and down motions required to make a limp piece of rope stand up stiff.
What is truly impressive is that he is yet to break a smile over it.
Very dry sense of humour.
