Outlaw its the round clicky button on the top unless you got a polaroid in which case its the weird button pushy thing on the side/front.

That's supposed to be a very nice lens! Haven't played with one yet.

Depending on the old lenses you have you may have some compatibility issues with the D5000 body. This is from NikonUSA.com site (find it better than the AU one):
    Compatible Lenses
AF-S or AF-I: All functions supported.
    • Type G or D AF NIKKOR without built-in autofocus motor: All functions except autofocus supported. IX NIKKOR lenses not supported.
    • Other AF NIKKOR: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D color matrix metering II. Lenses for F3AF not supported.
    • Type D PC NIKKOR: All functions supported except autofocus and some shooting modes.
    • AI-P NIKKOR: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D color matrix metering II.
    • Non-CPU: Autofocus not supported. Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function. Electronic rangefinder can be used if lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster

Outlaw, Nikon is a great choice if you can use your old lens do not get a kit lens, they are not very good
When I got my D200 I bought the body only and used my old lens that I used with the 801s.
Back then the cameras used to come with better kit lens than now. I have it with the Nikkor 35-70 (made in Japan) and got the Nikkor 75-240.
With this 2 lens I have done all my birds and flora images during 2007,2008 and 2009.
For landscaping I bought the Tokina 12-24 f/4
Now, with the D300s I have the Nikon 70-300VR which it is an awesome lens for just under $1000.

I am looking foward to your contributions

Actually I'd be very careful of the camera mount on a D3000/D5000 with one of those. A 70-200 f/2.8 VRII weighs about 3 times as much as a D5000 - or about the same as a D3s.

D90 and upwards, no problem but the consumer DSLR bodies aren't as well built for the heavier lenses. It's OK if you only pick the camera up by the lens but picking the lens up by the camera could stress things a little. Same applies to Canon's up to (including) the EOS50D. You need to be careful.
