There are realy 2 key differences:
D2x is a full pro body and is heavier and larger to carry
D300 is a much newer camera and has far better ISO performance and imaging ability.

I know what it is like lugging the D3s around and I have my D200 as a backup. The thing that makes me reach for the D3s is the fact is is so much more advanced at image capture over the D200. But the weight is a killer if you have to carry it for several hours.

I'd go the D300 and see if you can get a D300s.

I know your talking nikon but dont forget the Pentax ones are sealed too... well some of them. And i agree i have gotten shots that i couldnt with a 'normal camera' I know i have left my k20 out in big storms taking a hammering while the shooter next to me retreated they have quite a few sealed lens also. Mine goes out all the while with me on our boat and i have no worries about the water. There is even a guy i know who takes his K20 into the shower with him to wash the salt off it! pretty sure its not that sealed... but he hasnt killed it yet

certainly makes you less afraid to take certain shots... and if i'm really worried.. i take rachaels canon d10 underwater P&S and use that... seems very wrong taking a camera into the surf tho!

Example shots i couldnt of got...

I wasn't going to mention this, but now that Steve mentioned the 'P' word....

My near 30 year old Pentax LX is (was) fully enviro sealed.

Back then it was the first and only Pro 35mm SLR with dust/moisture sealing.

    BTW, nice images fella's.

and to use the P word again...

In pentax's case sealed means in excess of 70 seals on the body plus extras on the lens to give what amounts to weatherproof. They get used in torrential downpours and i know they have been used in weather balloons due to the extreme conditions (cold and damp back to warm and dry) that they can take given the cheap price....

One of the severe weather test that left a big impression on me and helped to select the Nikon D200 was test done by Jim Reed,
I cannot find it any more in the web, however he have several photos using the D700 under similar conditions.
The D300 have the same seal specs then the D700 and D200 so I suggest to visiting Jim's page and have a look his work

I have a 801s body and I would be lucky to get $100 for it!
