Stripe-Breasted Brown Falcon

Had an amazing encounter yesterday. Pic is not mine but taken by Helen my other half, but I'll take credit for spotting the action!
We were watching three Fuscous honey eaters at Crusoe reservoir in Bendigo and taking some photos. Then in a blink of an eye a Yellow Footed Antechinus jumped out and grabbed one of the birds.
It scurried off up the tree with the dead bird while the two remaining ones attacked it. It eventually dropped the dead bird then went down to the ground to collect it. The other two honey eaters continued to attack the Antechinus.
Helen managed to get some video footage too.

Nut sure if it is one or two chicks but by the size obviously hatched a while ago. I wonder if the eggs that are visible are left over from the original laying or are a subsequent laying. With all the rain I have not seen the parents where I was seeing them all the time before, so I hope they have not abandoned the nest and the chicks.

Even though the nest box is made of marine ply and painted with linseed oil on the outside I need to look at water proofing - the access hatch is in the top so maybe sealing just the top will work. Definitely do not want to use paint.

Well that was 13 months ago - I got three chicks in that brood and all flew away - at least one survived as I still see it flying around with mum - until the chicks are 18 months old they are multicoloured but are basically green.

I got another 4 chicks in January 2021, one died very young in the nest and unfortunately the other 3 were killed by a possum that got into the box. I caught the possum and took it away and put the bird box back up in August last year.

While there was a lot of interest in the box from spring 2021 no nesting took place - maybe the Rosellas remembered the possum as mum would have tried to go into the box with the possum in there.

Just after Christmas I found a new set of eggs which tied in with the second brood for the year.

With no possums around, I have four noisy chicks that are growing up well.

IMO one of the most technically difficult birds to photograph well. Rarely still and high contrast plumage can make obtaining good overall exposure a bit of a challenge, though I'm pretty happy with this result :)

If they are brushtails,if you can get the hole size right,the possums won’t be able to get in but the Rosellas will.
You will need to Google the size it’s around 65mm from memory.
I did this but the possums then decided to chew the hole bigger,so I used a bit of light guage sheetmetal,and that sorted them.

The size of the possums head governs the size hole it can get through.

Spent a few hours trying to get a good pic of these Swallows.These are two better ones out of around 150.
Taken as they were flying around catching insects mid to late one arvo,at one of the dams on the property.
The late or early soft light is great for these types of shots.
