I think a fairly recent version of Picasa offers the option of saving the changes so that they change the file.

What you say is basically right. It is more designed for organising and viewing photos.

I thought when I was using it a few years ago that it did a pretty good job of that and the simple adjustments were quite useful.

Hmmm, maybe your right. Previously I have lost the 'edits' to about 1000 photos after Picasa's database has screwed up forcing me to recreate it.
