    Nikon 35-70mm f2.8

    Nikon 35-70mm f2.8,

Any one used/got one ? thinking might get one as I can't afford the 24-70mm f2.8 and seem to use the 50mm f1.8mm all the time, and don't use my 18-200mm anymore... well only at 18mm when I do landscapes.

or can someone recommend a good prime, smaller than 50mm and sharp, as I like getting close to my subjects. Might hire a couple and see what works best for me, might even try a 105mm Macro as a portrait lens, have heard it works well.

    thx
    Matt.

So I take it you want to photograph people and landscapes, therefore no zoom required?

The 35-70 would cover this nicely I would think, but 18mm on landscapes may be the bare minimal. Thats why I just bought the Tokina 12-24 for landscapes.

Hiring sounds like a good idea if you can do that.

Matt, all the images in this gallerie are taken with the Tokina 12-24 f/4 on the D200 and D300s bodies.
I love the Tokina and I think that it is as good as the Nikon f/4 model
The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S model is an awesome lens and perhaps the best in the class but cost about the same as the 24-70.

Matt Sigma has released a 17-50mm f/2.8 this may be more like what you are after.
Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM now available: Digital Photography Review

The 35-70 f/2.8 Nikkor is a very good lens but not as good as its replacement the 24-70.

Theres also 20, 24, 35 mm primes to consider.

Had a play with the AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED, about $1400 secondhand, the AF-S in low light was quick. mmm.... too many.

Prefer some more primes, as I love the 50mm, just want something a little wider for landscape.

Matt you can pick up the Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 AF lens for under $700 and the 24mm f/2.8 AF for under $500 new.

Have you considered either of these?

I've used a lot of different Nikon lenses and have to say, "Get the best you can afford". The 35 - 70 is not in the same league as the 24 - 70; it is not as fast, as sharp or as expensive! Bear in mind that over time, you can keep your good lenses but will replace your camera body. That's why I go for the best lens I can afford for what I want to do.
    Just my 2c worth.
