    Aaaarrrrgggggg!!

    The prices for gear on DWI is droppin daily!!! Yesterday the nikkor 300mm f/4 prime was$1245, now its $1216!!! I can buy that, the sb900 and TC14 for under $2k

    But havent got the funds (ie Minister for War and Finance says I dont)!!

    Careful with the TC with the f/4. You loose one stop on the 1.4x which drops it to f/5.6.

    On the D80/D90/D200 this is about the limit of the AF sensor. The TC17 EII is optically better but would drop the lens to f/6.7 which would be too low a lighting. I think the D300s/D700 have a better AF sensor than the D200 though so they may be OK with this. I know the D3s certainly does.

    Read heaps on this combo (300mm with 1.4tc) and it retains sharpness - but yes it does stop it down. Im sure if I told her about sharpness, she would show me what sharpness meant in her language :P

    Should have no probs now with my D300s

    The 300 f/4 with the TC 1.4 it is very good. I would not use the 1.7 for a avian sharp image regardless of which type of camera it is used.

    I just bought a Nikon D300s from Ebay - an Australian supplier $1546-00

    It may go lower but I am very happy with that
