Nikon D300s r11 and af issue

Can anyone please advise. My D300s has been playing up since the weekend. What its doing is loosing auto focus ability - ie none of the settings (C, S) and focus type (single point etc) make any difference - yes I checked the lens to make sure its on AF.

It also displays r11 on the bottom right side of the viewfinder where the number of shots remaining to fill the cards usually display. Sometimes it will not shoot at all, but this I suspect has to do with my setting of focus lock before release rather than the issue itself as it will shoot when in focus.

Can someone tell me why autofocus (I tried 2 lenses and both have the same issue, so not lens specific) doesnt work? I must say earlier the long lens of mine worked, but tonight it didnt, flashing r11. The only thing I can think of that I did differently is change the settings from RAW to JPEG Fine - but cant say if this had anything to do with it, just started happening around that time.

    Carlos,

    I think R11 is a buffer notice...

That is correct, however the buffer is not full nor is the card (reformated card and taking first shots). The issue is the AF, why that doesnt work?

Whole bunch of suggestions. That say turn off or on Long Range NR, switch cards, etc.

    Have you tried another card?

    Have you reset the camera?

Right I think I found the issue. Looks like it may be a firmware bug. The AF works on both shutter and another button AF-ON. Now in the menu, you can choose to have the AF work with both AF-ON and half press Shutter, or just AF-ON button. So I changed it from Shutter/AF-ON to AF-ON only and then back again, and now it works!
