Pictures don't lie. That is before photoshop.
I remember in my sailing days I tried taking several shots of rough seas. In some cases it was very rough with huge seas.
The photo's never did it justice, it always looked mild.

Thats because in shots like those I believe you need to have something in the shot to give you a perspective...
So in terms of your rough seas it may of been another boat or perhaps birds between the waves.
in terms of his hill probably would of looked a lot worse if he took it at a distance with someone standing at the top of the hill or another car and taken with a narrower lens
