I was about to purchase a D5100 but then did the checks on which of my current Nikkor lenses would work - there are no hard and fast rules on compatibility but it is a point worthy of mention.
As it happens the D5100 does not have a body autofocus motor so my older Nikkor lenses would not have had AF capability.
In the end it was easy to justify the extra $ to buy the D7000 - all my old lenses will work with this body. It sure pays to do your research.

						Paul,
I had a 500D up to a few months ago and found it an excellent camera. My advice for whatever you go with is to buy the body only and put the money saved into a decent lens. The 550D + 24-105 f4 L is a very good combo.
Cheers,
Mark
look at the size of the censer , first
with a canon the I.S. feature is built into the lens which means you can take a RAW photo , other cameras the image stabilizer corrects the photo in the camera as a jpeg photo
to replace a canon EOS slr film camera with a digital camera you would be looking at paying $3000 up
Not the case in a Nikon body where you get VR lens
Regarding Replacement for a Canon you can invest well under $ 3000
A Canon D7 which it is an excelent body cost $ 1300
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lenses cost $ 365
Tokina AT-X 116 Pro DX 11-16mm f2.8 Price: $609.00 AUD
Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM Price: $602.00 AUD
They are all good lens.
