    Setting Custom White Balance (CWB)

    Does anyone here set a CWB? I have a shoot coming up for a newborn (I've never photographed one before, I'm a mess and I'm not being paid a cent haha). I have a Nikon D90 and I've found instruction on youtube on how to set it, I also have a grey card. Normally I'm outdoors and use 'cloudy'.

    Skin tones on newborns are notoriously difficult so I'm thinking setting a CWB would be advantageous, especially given I don't know what sort of light source I'm going to have to work with. Or I just make sure I photograph the card and play in post? I'm calibrated so should be able to eyeball it...hopefully... What would you recommend?

    Oh and this is Sarah/LSD, thought I should start using this profile since it's quite fitting. It was registered a long time ago as a joke

    Sarah,

    In my Canon you just take a pic of the grey card then select that image in Manual WB settings to set the WB. I assume that the D90 will be similar.

    Or, you could just use RAW mode and adjust the WB during editing.

    Thanks That was the youtube video I saw! so yes just taking a picture of the card and then setting it via 'pre' on the menu. I always shoot raw so I think I might still try and set custom but then I still have the back up of lightroom anyway.

    If you shoot raw it doesn't really matter how you set your white balance as you can adjust in post production anyway. So you could just pick a setting of say, daylight.
    What you probably don't want is AWB if shooting a sequence of shots for a panorama.

    shoot in raw and adjust in lightroom [perhaps try and reduce the amount of white in images as it may pick up a cast as you change w/balance]
    them baby things are a strange color to start with lol

    Thanks the shoot went really well. To be honest I edited baby to a colour that I felt was representative rather than accurate. Sometimes limbs go purple, skin goes red, it was hard to have it uniform across the range of images
