Actually thinking about it no need for a date lets just leave it open![]()
Hey guys
After buying my two new books for trying to learn how to use my speedlight other than plonking it on top..I got all inspired
I starting looking in to DIY light boxes (there is a reason for this one I can't discuss in case Ian reads in here)
Now these look REALLY easy to make..so I thought I wonder whether others would join me in the fun of doing their own!!
My suggestion is for those that wish to participate all you need to do is
- Make your own DIY light box show/tell us how you made it if you have no idea how there are like 1000's of tutorials just google it (a photo of the finished light box must be provide in your post)
- you then need to take a photo of something in it
- then post the photo in here for others to talk/criitque
This is not about cracking out your professional kit if you own some
you can be creative I guess, as you don't have to use white backgrounds from what I can see or white lights..have a play and have some fun.
I dont think I will be able to make mine for a week or two so I thought lets aim for peeps to have their stuff up by 21st/22nd Jan
thats 3 weeks what do others think?
This is not a competition more like a group of people having a crack at something they may not have done before, you can do it as big or as little as you want..from what I can gather you don't need big fancy flashes as you can simply light the boxes with table lamps etc...so anyone that is interested should be able to partake in this with out the neeed for expensive gear. Thats right you people with compacts I see no reason why you can't have a go would be interesting to see the results
I hope people get on board as it will be fun and interesting to see what others make and take...but if not! oh well I'm still going to have a go

I did make one from a cardboard box and some light weight paper but I could never get it to where I was happy so I bought a cheap light tent. I don't have any images of the trial setup or the light tent but these are from the light tent using two SB800's on a black cloth.

As Lou has mentioned you can just use table lamps but a word of caution the colour temperature of the light is crucial and so your pictures may have a different colour cast to them depending on the light source and your camera's white balance setting.
This should prove fun
Well thought up Lou!

I started out using a purpose built lightbox which never gave me any good results, the lights just weren't strong enough, the box always felt like it was either too big or too small and the opening just never seemed to be in the right position...So, after I bought my first DSLR I took my first big step in product work by making my own lightbox.
It was very crude as most home-made stuff is, basically a cardboard box with windows cut in each side and thick white paper as the inserts. To light it I went to bunnings and bought a couple of those 500W work lamps which cost a total of about $20.
Since then I've made several adjustments, and I'm not longer using a cardboard box, and still have a long way to go to building the perfect box for what I need.
I have a few photos of the original stuff at home which I'll post later.
Here's some results though
