Canon Powershot Lens Will Not Work

I have had a Canon Powershot digital for a couple of years and has worked great - suited to what I need.

I tried to use it yesterday and the lens will not come out - causing an error fault and of course you cannot use the camera. The lens tries to move but does not come out.

I did spill some ice cream on the outside of the lens when it was out a little while back and cleaned it off but the lens did retract before it was all off. However, I have used the camera a bit since then and didn't seem to be an issue.

The electronics are all ok and it would seem to be a mechanical issue. Probably not worth getting someone to look at it but open to suggestions on something I could spray on the telescopic lens movement to try and loosen it up - failing that I will pull it apart but I don't have a good record with such things .

I need to buy a new mobile phone (normal mobile - no smart phone) so if the camera is dead I will try an find a phone with good MPs and a good lens rather than buy a new phone and new camera.

I own a photo shop and we see a "stuck" lens at least once a week.
Generally, unless its a real easy job, they are uneconomical to repair.
The camera companies only supply complete lens assemblies, and the lenses themselves are not designed to be repaired. Usual repair cost is $250 - $400 depending on brand, and my normal suggestion is that it's cheaper to get a new one.
If your is a few years old, you will generally get a better camera for the cost of the repair!
If you like Canon, check out the S95 and S100 - I use both and they are great little cameras with brilliant quality.

Seems to be a common problem, i have powershot that the lens comes out but not enough for it to focus properly. Cost me nothing so i'll open it up and see if i can fix it, seems to be just the lens mechanism is out of mesh.

Pulled it apart but could not get at the lens activating mechanism. Managed to get it to move a little but is knackered - shame really because all the electronics are fine.

Bought a $99 Olympus Vr 310 - 14mp and 10x optical zoom - good enough for happy snaps and for putting up pics on AULRO - cheap enough to throw away when it breaks.

One thing do not like about it is its mobile phone style battery - when it gets flat it has to be recharged in the camera. The old one had two AA batteries that I used 3000mAh rechargables - when they ran flat just two new ones in - no waiting. I cannot see the 750mAh battery in this one lasting nearly as long as the old AAs.

Had the same thing happen with a Sony. Agents wanted $600 to replace the lense assembly. T he camera cost that much when I bought it.
Pulled it to pieces to see how it worked. Amazed at the intricate assembly in these things. Bought a cheap Canon for $100 its doing all the same things but same as yours AA batteries in the Sony and recharge in the Canon . Bit of a pain but Oh Well.

collect some WD40 in the can's cap by spraying a bit inside it. With a toothpick or any similar object get a drop of the oil and lubricate the lens barrel by applying it between the barrel and its mounting (a circular motion is needed to lubricate the perimeter). put your camera with the lens facing upward and wait overnight.
You might need to repeat for a couple of times. The stuck lens on my camera was released after the second trial.

Don't forget to sweep the lens barrel from excess lubrication, once fully extracted.

    Good luck

Did all that - no go unfortunately - think I spilled some ice cream on the lens - cleaned it off and it continued to work for a week then froze up (Canon cameras have Sony displays).
