    I would go very gently with the contrast adjustments.
    I just done some very basic PP on the top left image.

    Levels are out, so to recuperate some of the missing pixels adjsut the levels on the LHS point.
    After doing that go to layers, new adjustments, curves and select linear contrast and use the default parameters.
    Last select the the spider and do a unsharp mask and adjust it.

    There is not use for me to post and example because the info (pixels available) on the posted image are not enough to have an optimun result.

    Do the adjustments on the tiff file and after converting it to jpg do the necessary sharpening adjustments for the web.

    What kind of lens are you using? To get really good shots of something small like this then a macro lens would greatly improve your chances of a nice clear sharp shot of the spiders..
    Thanks for the comments. At the bottom of the original post I said what I used. Nikon D300s, Nikon 105mm macro, Nikon external flash with diffuser TTL.
