    Finally lashed out

I've always wanted to buy myself a good camera - but somehow there has always something more important in the budget..bills/kids/house/car.. I'm sure we all can relate..

I just turned 50 - and there probably still are lots more important things in the budget...but I figured bugger it - time to listen to those fellas from Nike and "Just Do It"

    A Nikon D7000 with a 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6VR and a 35mm f/1.8G seemed like a damn good idea

It's certainly a step up from anything I have used in the past, but so far very happy with it. (Slightly intimidated ... but happy.)

I'll look at adding a longer lens once I really get my head around how to use it properly, I suspect I am in for lots of reading and learning. I am sure this thing is far smarter than me.

Anyway, I can't wait to really get out and play. Now I've got the equipment..... I just need to work on the technical stuff and see if I can find my artistic genes.... I must have at least 1 or 2 somewhere I hope.

With a bit of luck I'll be producing images as good as some here in the not too distant future.

    Stay tuned...

congrats on the purchase. We have a D7000 and its a great camera. We have the Nikkor 18-200mm lens which covers about all the focal length you ever need without having to swap lenses and risk getting dust in. Its expensive but very worth it - got mine off evil bay from Hong Kong for about $780 - they are around $1,000 odd in Aus. Good luck and happy shooting, you will not regret it!!

Congratulations. Canon man myself, but you've bought yourself a great bit of kit. All you can do know is use it, use it, use it (wasn't that also an advertisng catch cry?). Have fun!

Congratulations, the Nikon 7000 is a fine camera.
If you would like to have a good long lens under $1000 go for the 70-300VR.
On the green imports you can get it for under $600 and up to 200mm is as sharp as the 70-200VR which cost 3 times more.
Also if you would like to have sharp images get a good tripod and head before you considering more glass

    Thanks WhiteD3,

You are right, the shopping list seems to be getting longer but can't wait to really get my teeth into using it.

As for the early mornings - having a teenage some that is a competitive swimmer, I've been doing my fair share of those for sometime - maybe I've just solved what to do between dropping him off and picking back up again

Thanks for the suggestions Chucaro, I'm heading to China for work in about a month, so may see if I can track down a 70 -300VR while I'm away.

I was going to buy the camera OS too.... but decided I really wanted Aussie stock and an Australian warranty. (When it comes to faulty goods, my skills are similarity to those of a well known mod here )

I'm off to Sydney tomorrow for 5 days thanks to work: I noticed this starts Friday( Vivid Sydney - A Festival of Light, Music & Ideas ) - so might be a good opportunity to give the new toy a run.

    Cheers, Mark

Well done the 7000 hadn't come out when I bought my D300s I absolutely love it and I'm sure you will yours.

I am saving my bikkies for more lenses, but it took me nearly 2 years with my old lenses to decide which ones I want

I've been rather slack about getting back to this thread.

Unfortunately work seems to keeps getting in the way of life..

However I did manage to get out and play with the new toy on a recent trip to Sydney.

It's awesome!.. very pleased with it.... now I just need to get my skills up to those of the machinery... Sounds a bit like my Land Rover actually.

Anyway, here are a few shots, all hand held unfortunately (Because some stupid didn't take his tripod with him )

I am really looking forward to the results when I really learn to use this thing...
