Both cameras are very good, some models of Nikon can take old lens which can be a very good value.
I would not touch kit lens.

If the sensor is clean then, yes, it's a very good camera. It was discontinued in May 2011. I would rate it a better camera than the EOS550D and the D5100 for still images and it has a much better ability for manual control of the camera. You can still buy new ones (body only) for around $700.

Very capable camera, if you can test it for hot pixels it is easy if you can download the image to a PC and view it at 100%
I would go for a new body only and add the awesome 50mm and 70-300VR lens and you will finish with an excellent system.
    Cheers

My Ma had her second coming to photography on a 550D - now predominantly working with macro photography. She loves to compact size and low weight even though she has some chunky lenses. I'd find it frustrating because manual control is very much a second thought, but in Av or Tv it's a fast and handy little machine.

Thanks guys for your advice, I ended up with a 2nd hand (only 524 shutter actuations!) D90, with a 18-105 kit lens, looks new, for less than $700, will get new lenses next year.
    Was an un-wanted prize.
Battery shows up as new too.

    Well done Fraser.

Watch Ebay like a hawk you never know what comes up. I got my D300 +++ Saved about $2500 on new price . All bits in as new condition. People were trading up to the newer D700 at the time
