Thanks for the link. That Site gives my humble little d5000 a very good wrap as it does the kit lenses. Proof that you don't have to spend big or go fx to get a great amateur setup
Cheers
IMO one of the best sites for lens reviews is HERE

We have a thread here with samples of birds photos with kit lens.
It is possible to get good images of birds with cheap lens but the percentage of keepers (good shots) is very small due to the limitations of the optics.
I was able to improve the quality of my photos when I purchased the 70-300VR lens.

Only one catch the discontinued Nikon T6 diopter is scarce as hens teeth now days. The Canon D500 is the alternative close-up filter but even so it can be hard to source.
I think the 70-300 may be about to be bumped down a peg by the new 70-200 f/4.

The problem is that 200 is not a good range for birds.
Perhaps if the model allows for a 1.4 converter then it can be used for avian photography,
Then again we have to see the performance of the optics on that lens with a converter.
It can take the TC's the issue is that the older bodies AF systems can really struggle above f/5.6. But it will all come down to performance.

G'day Derek,
The 70-300VR has one more advantage over the new 70 - 200 f/4 in my eyes...
I already own one!!
But you are right the 70 - 200f/4 looks interesting...
Does anyone have a sure fire cure for GAS..? I think I may be a high risk candidate.
