I would appreciate any recommendations for a shirt-pocket sized replacement for my Canon IXUS which (as in a previous thread) has a terminal condition

    thanks

Hey, me and a mate just went through africa with a new Nikon coolpix. its 16 Megapixel so we didnt really need a zoom. just point and shoot then crop later, was amazing quality. also has a gps in it and a compass so you can look on a world map and it shows you where your pics were taken and in which direction. very happy with it. also 10m water proof and 3 mtrs drop proof, didnt test either, but it was dropped a lot and just felt tough.

    Here is what we got.

    Cheers

    panasonic TZ 10

Have been using Panasonic TZ series since series 1, have had series 1 5 7 and 10 all been great cameras and good options for shooting in built software for about 20 different scene settings, beach sunset, scenery portrait, food, parties, fireworks, night time sports etc.

16 megapixel plus electronic ZOOM for magnification

From the TZ 10 series onwards you get built in GPS data for photos taken plus manual control over aperture settings

From TZ series 20 you get 3D picture options

Cost varies where you buy from, l found cheapest to be DWI on the internet where l purchased them for mid $200 when on sale in Australia for mid $400

concur with the last 2 posts, get a camera with a GPS built in, Ive also got the Panasonic Lumix TZ10, Its my 3rd Lumix, they have great optics, (Leica Lenses)

Excellent if you use with iPhoto / flickr etc as you see all your photos laid out on a Map,

    eg

That said my next camera is a Olympus OMD E5M , Im a OM1 fan from way back, no GPS, but not quite a pocket camera either.

    I have a Pentax wg1 camera

I have bought a Pentax wg-1 it is water proof to 10 meters, shock proof, and you can take a movie with it
and you can drop it , 14 mega pixal, wide 5x redeye, hang it of your belt when rock climbing
it is made for hard treatment it does not come with a case only a ring around the camera lens that you can remove.
    very Happy with it.

Have a pick through Digital Photography Review

These guys are brutal and generally suggest alternatives to certain models and the pitfalls of others. I've usually found their reviews to be outstanding—short of the hardcore professional reviewers for high-end gear out there (technical lens reviews etc.).

Just add a fast very SD card for the best fun. Makes copying a breeze and allows the camera to operate at maximum speed. You then get the benefit of a high quality pro card that might not fail when it counts. B&H is your friend here—search for the specials.

Check out the Sony DSC HX30V , it is 18.2 mega pixels, GPS and Wi-Fi enabled, 20x optical zoom, 40x total zoom, macro to 1cm, a brilliant little camera.
