I borrowed a manfrotto 190xpro over the weekend it's a top unit but with my big lens not really stable at full height.
I can get a manfrotto 055xpro and head for $250.00 in excellent condition but it's damned heavy any thoughts on other tripods that may fit the bill?

^^^ Not always, it's generally a heavy lens and it just slides forward.
OP: You can get the carbon versions, but they're pricey. I have an 055. It's not too bad once you get used to it. Especially for the price.
Also check the Gtizo range.
The 190xpro is very similar to the 055xpro in terms of capacity and leg stability. I have a 055MF3 and have used it a lot but find with the D3s I need to put the camera bag on the hook to weigh it down more often. I wasn't too dissatisfied with the 055MF3 until a bought a light weight Gitzo GT1540T traveler which almost out performs the Manfrotto. To the point I'm seriously considering upgrading the MF to a Gitzo 2xxx or 3xxx unit.

I use the 190XPROB with a 7D and 24-105 L (my biggest lens) with no dramas. But it IS heavy on a long trek although it makes for a sturdy walking stick in streams/surf/rocks/etc. Spend the extra $$ on a quality carbon fibre tripod that you'll have for years.
