I'm going to buy a macro lens for my other half this xmas.
any one got any suggestions? something middle of the range?
was looking at the Tamron 90mm jobbie which seems to score highly for the price.
They will release a updated version of it soon though which has some nice features. Costs somewhat more though and it seems the older version is one sale now because of it.
We have a D90.
Thanks!
Ben
been going thru this myself of late and there was more to it than i thought
what sort of macro work? insects, flowers or ?
inside or outside and would extra lighting be needed?
i found the consensus was if you were going to buy the tamron, buy local so you can exchange it easily if it isnt sharp, as quality seems to vary. dwi have them at about $350 at the moment on ebay
have you looked at the sigma 105mm f/2.8?
a bit dearer but is much better than the tamron by all reports, tac sharp and consistently well made. can pick them up from $699 new off ebay. hardly any second hand ones pop up which is a good sign
i just scored a 35mm f/2.8 tokina with macro but they arent for everybody as the macro working distance is a bit short for many, making lighting a bit of a factor but it is a dual purpose lens giving near full frame perspective, fast tac sharp pics on a D90 which is what i am after as a street / general purpose lens and is way better than the nikon 35mm f/1.8 to boot ...

I've got Sigma 105 macro. Very happy with it. Went with this over the tamron because of better test results.

Nikon, Tamaron, Tokina ans Sigma are all good.
If you are going to take shots of insects that can give you a nasty sting I will suggest you to go for the Sigma 150 or Tamaron 180.
A colleague uses the Sigma 105 (old version without HSM) for reproduction work and it's an amazing bit of gear. They can be had at very reasonable prices on the second hand market.
