G'day all!
Just bought myself a Leica R4s with a Summicron 50 for about $ 450. Yep, that's right, no electrics! Happy now as the proverbial pig...Despite the advantages of digital photography, as posting the pics online, it never really caught on with me. Looking forward to receiving the little marvel.

Ahhhh Leica .... me like-a .... a lovely bit of kit. Glad to see someone who's still using film.
cheers
For how much longer will film be available? Many sizes have long disappeared. There are almost no processors left. I think PhotoContinental is the only one offering a black and white film service left in Brisbane.

Yep, a real shame, isn't it? We are lucky to have a shop not too far away, but they are sending away the film for development themselves, so it will take a couple of days longer. I am thinking of setting up my own dark room (but it's still in the planning stage ...has been for ages, without getting anywhere nearer) as a counteractive method.
My feeling is, despite the technological advancement of digital photography, some will stick to traditional film and, like those records (the black ones, with a little hole in the middle), it will make a return in the future. Not for the masses, that's for sure, but for people with genuine interest, taste and affection, the connoisseurs....

I too have been heading back to film lately. I now mix digital with film (35mm, mf, 4x5) depending on the result I'm after. All purely rank amateur of course. I have a few film cameras because they can be had so cheap and i cant resist. Coincidentally i have a Leica r4s too. My favourite lens with it is the 35-70mm.
Development is kind of expensive these days so i have bought a rotary processor from eBay and learnt to develop both B&W and c41 colour. Its pretty quick and
easy and you don't need a dark room unless you want to print. I usually scan the negatives, but am starting to try paper printing now.
This is all new to me, but i find it a little funny because its just the way things used to be done for many photographers.
JoJo, congratulations on your purchase. If you can afford it, buy up quickly on any second-hand Leica-R lenses you think you might need in the future, because their prices are bound to skyrocket the way Leica-M lenses did after the introduction of the Leica M8. Leica now makes an accessory for fitting R lenses to M bodies. I wouldn't be tempted to build a darkroom at home. Spend the money on a decent scanner. Buy a film changing bag and a processing tank, process your films at home (B&W and Colour) scan the results and get them printed at your local camera shop. Big W charge 34 cents for 5"x7" colour prints, you couldn't compete with that at home.
Cheers, Rob S
