Have a look how many shots it have done and for any marks if it have been dropped.
Se if a lens is available for testing it.
I would go for a 40D or 50D cheap body and a good lens than a new body and crap lens.

A mate of mine has exactly that model. The pics of our winter trip were done with it. I only had a short time to assess the thing, seems a decent buy to me if the price tag is alright. I did not bother learning al the menues and details, just aim, click and done. Works really well. Has some nice features, too, and with 15 Mpix you will be alright for a while. Sorry I have no clue about the choice of lenses out there. Can't be that bad I reckon.
    Cheers

Well the price is 400$ they are ex-government cameras the same like the 30D I bought previously that came I a mint state.
They are offered by PhotoContinental :

USED CANON EOS 50D BODY ONLY 90 DAY WARRANTY

The lenses I am going to use are the 24-105 f/4 L and the 50 f/1.8

I believe that the price is a real bargain. My only worry was due to the contradictory reviews I read on the net about the image quality of 15 Mpix of the sensor.

The problem with the internet is that sometimes some people have an experience and write about it, but in the end they are only a handful, despite all the fuss. It's the same with the oil pump bolt on Td5-engines (just as an example). I reckon the 50D is as good as any and better than most in its class. Of course, you may always be at risk of buying a lemon, but with Canon that kind of risk is fairly low.
    Just my 2c...
