    Third party battery grips

Hey I'm going to be getting a new camera body and I would like a battery grip.

the manufacturers grip is over 300 but third party ones are half the price.
but with all the same functions and in some case more.

Does anyone on here use a third party grip? or is it best to stay away from them?

There's a few options available. I had a look at a few for the D800 in Singapore but didn't buy any as the price was more than Australia (). The genuine ones are priced ridiculously. The better made one for the D800 seems to be the Pixel Vertex whether that applies to other Nikon models I can't say.

I bought a Polaroid battery grip for my Canon thinking that the price of genuine ones are very expensive. I ended up receiving the grip that drains the batteries in less than 12 hours. I finally found and bought a used genuine canon battery grip on Amazon.

I also bought a Polaroid flash, it lasted for a couple of months.

Lesson learned, I will only buy genuine products.

The main issue withe the aftermarket grips is construction seems to be ok but not great. Also none are weather sealed.

The other issue I have is that being plastic and not (at least structurally) magnesium alloy I am concerned about using the tripod mount.

Which camera are you getting? D7100?

Not much help to you as I have Pentax...

I bought a copy off eBay but, before it arrived, I picked up a genuine grip. As a result I've never used the copy. I have thought about pulling it apart to compare the two.

I did buy mine after reading reviews/comparisons of copies on the Pentax forum.

The two are almost indistinguishable at first look.

    Hey Derek

Apparently Pixel Vertax has the same weather sealing as the camera

and yes I have decided to go with the D7100

the reviews I have watched and the research I have done keeps flagging the camera as the best DX camera Nikon has ever made

and one of the reviews I watched on youtube rates is as the best on the market of any DX camera.

I think I'n going to go Genuine Grip

the issues I'm now faced with is grey import vs buying Local

I really want to buy local because it would be nice to have the 2yr warranty from Nikon but the cheapest camera I have found is a smidge over 1400

if I buy from Digital Rev which have the own 12mth warranty

for 1500 I can get the body, the genuine grip and a spare battery!!

I just dont know what to do as I simply just don't have the money to throw around and I really really want to save for the 24-70

The D7100 really is good and you'll start using it easily as functionally it is based on the D80.

That's interesting about the weather sealing as the D800 one isn't.

As for places to buy try Photo Continental and CameraPro (both in Brisbane) online prices aren't as good as if you call them. Michaels in Melbourne are also excellent and in Sydney ECS.
But with the D7100 I'd even see what price Harvey Norman will do.

Might have to disagree with you on one point DM. Although things may have changed. I used to frequent the camera shops in Melbourne on a yearly basis & Michaels were always the dearest. Buy a long shot. This was a couple of years ago. Could always get a far better price from Ted's or Vanbar. Camera Exchange were pretty good too. Just my personal observations.

I got a good deal off Michaels on two cameras and other items in the last few years. I remember they used to be horribly expense but times have changed. I find Ted's doesn't want to move on price and Vanbar to be middle of the road but with a lot of stock. Camera Exchange is also good.
