Camera cleaning

Having borrowed our daughter's Nikon DSLR (D7000) for a recent very dusty outback trip, I'd like to return it to her a bit cleaner than it is.

While we generally kept it in a bag away from the dust while not being used, its still managed to end up with quite a bit of dust on the outside. I don't think its actually got inside the camera at all as I can't see any evidence on the images.

Having never cleaned a camera before is it something I could do myself, or is it a job that's best left to someone that knows what they are doing?
I've had a quote of $80 from a local camera shop who apparently sends them away to Nikon in Melbourne. The $80 doesn't faze me, but if its something I can do myself then I'd rather learn how.

The $80 will probably also include a sensor clean. I use 5 things to clean the outside of the camera:
Canned Air in short blasts
A dry micro fibre cloth
A damp (not wet) micro fibre cloth
A soft brush
A bulb puffer

Just take it easy and gentle and it should be fine. The D7000 is very well sealed. If you do remove the lens, clean around it thoroughly first and remove it with the camera and lens pointing straight down. But if you haven't changed lenses it might be best to leave it in place and just clean around it.

Just taken my wife's Nikon d700 into the Nikon camera place to get cleaned after a trip to a volcano and the camera is dusty and a bit grindy on the zoom.

Total price $490.

Floored me with the price. But the whole camera and lens is worth $5000 so have to get it done.

Wife's owes me one and the last time she can moan at the Landy costs

Yes, apparently the $80 does include a CCD clean, so I think I'll just go with that. If it was my own camera I'd be giving it a gentle clean as you've suggested, but since its not mine there's probably less risk if I just pay to do get it done

From what I've read over the years though - it's no guarantee you'll get a better job
