Hi Guys
I'm hopefully after a number of years next week hoping to buy my, for ever wanted Nikon 24/70mm 2.8g Lense
which got me thinking AGAIN about insurance.
WHY? because when I looked in my camera box (even though I don't have a massive amount of equipment) I added up what it cost to buy it all and with the lense I'm about to buy is roughly about 7 grand
Thats bodies, lenses, flash units remotes and all kinds of other bits and bobs such as filters etc. I'm sure if a lot of you went through your gear you would be shocked at how much money worth of gear you have accumulated over a period of time.
SO then I got thinking to myself how would I go about replacing this stuff if someone stole my box...simply I couldn't because this stuff has been collect over a period of about 6 years.
So realistically I really need to find some insurance. I was reading an article today in my photography magazine that talked about being very weary of putting your camera under house and contents..because of the considerations that if you use your camera for any type of business work your claim could be rejected as could it be if you take it out in to a place where its rugged and more susceptible to damage...i.e they said tell your insurer exactly what you plan to do with your camera if insuring under home and contents.
they basically said you would be better getting a specific policy for your gear.
Do any of you have insurance? I may of asked this sometime ago but it doesnt hurt to ask this question freash again espeically with new photographers to this section.
If so
- who do you in sure with?
- have you ever had a claim and how were they with it.
- what are you insured for and whats the monthly payment like on the policy
I don't even know where to start looking really so some info from people that may already be in the position of insuring would be helpful

Shannon's.
Ok care to elaborate...?
do you use Shanons home and contents or something, because that's all they appear to do that and car insurance

Have had three claims. I had a 73 civic. Only five speed regoed in Australia.
They insured it for $5000. Had a spin out on the freeway they spent $4800 on the car.
Next one was same car smaller ding. Because drive line was dinged they wrote it off.
$5000 cheque and they gave me the car back as I had salvage rights.
Sold the car to SA Whalla the vet there owns it. All done up. Looks great. I sold it for $2500.
I currently have 4 cars through them. You also get one piece of glass per car per 12 months.
Premium is on average to others.
The other was when I drowned me hilux. I i temized all to be replaced and repaired. It was all to har for then so they generously cashed me out.
My rating hasn't changed nor did our premiums.
They have worked for me.
Do not forget to bargain.
Hahahah I'm just wondering did you actually read the first post?
this insurance question is in relation to photography equipment not cars...

I got my wife's Nikon d700 and lenses and gear all insured on the house insurance. As a name item with a named amount.
Our house is with RACQ.
This means it is all insured any where in Australia for theft or accidental damage.

I think Shannons do do house and contents insurance. Worth asking if you have car insurance with them. Shannons give me a discount on multiple policies.

Having lost ~$6k of gear in a break in and only getting $2k from the house insurance; I'm a bit more diligent about these matters.
RACQ do cover photography gear in their home contents policy but it is for "cameras", not "camera" to a total (for all photography gear) of $2k (said without checking the exact number). These days I have all the gear nominated and pay a small premium for this, from memory <$100.
Yeah I'd say add it onto your home and contents insurance but declare it...
